Sëlva

Sëlva ( [ˈsɜlva] , German: Wolkenstein in Gröden; Italian: Selva di Val Gardena) is a comune (municipality) in the Val Gardena in South Tyrol, northern Italy, located about 30 kilometres (19 mi) east of the city of Bolzano. The Ladin place name derives from the Latin silva ("wood").

Geography

As of 30 December 2010, it had a population of 2,637 and an area of 53.2 square kilometres (20.5 sq mi). Sëlva borders the following municipalities: Badia, Campitello di Fassa, Canazei, Corvara, San Martin de Tor, and Santa Cristina Gherdëina.

It is perhaps best known as one of the starting points of the Sella Ronda ski tour.

History

Coat-of-arms

The emblem is quarterly, the first and third corners are per bend and per fess nebuly of argent and gules; the second and third corners are indented of azure and argent on a sable top. The emblem represents the insignia of the Lords of Wolkenstein who built the local castle in 1291. The emblem was adopted in 1968.

According to the 2011 census, 89.74% of the population speak Ladin, 5.11% Italian and 5.15% German as first language.

Val Gardena

Gherdëina (Ladin:  [ɡeʁˈdɜi̯na] ; Italian: Val Gardena [val ɡarˈdeːna; -ˈdɛːna]; German: Gröden [ˈɡʁøːdn̩]) is a valley in Northern Italy, in the Dolomites of South Tyrol. It is best known as a skiing, rock climbing, and woodcarving area.

Geography

The valley's main river is the Derjon. The three municipalities in Gherdëina are Urtijëi, Sëlva, and Santa Cristina; they were served by the Fërata de Gherdëina from 1916 until 1960.

Culture

Gherdëina is one of five valleys with a majority of Ladin speakers (two of these valleys are in South Tyrol). The form of the Ladin language spoken in this valley is called Gardenese in Italian, Grödnerisch in German and Gherdëina in Ladin.

Woodcarving

The woodcarving industry has flourished in Gherdëina since the 17th century. Since the 19th century, statues and altars carved in the area have been shipped to Catholic churches throughout the world. In the 18 th century, besides religious statuettes, the production of woodcarved figurines of genre art was widespread in the valley. Among them statuettes of beggars generally in pairs (female and male), four seasons, watchstands were very popular. In the 19th and 20th century, carving of wooden toys was such a widespread occupation in all Gardenese families that Amelia Edwards called Urtijëi the "capital of Toyland." One of the valley's best-known products is the peg wooden doll which was popular all over Europe and America in the 19th century.

Selva

Selva is a coastal comarca (county) in Catalonia, Spain, located between the mountain range known as the Serralada Transversal or Puigsacalm and the Costa Brava (part of the Mediterranean coast). Unusually, it is divided between the provinces of Girona and Barcelona, with Fogars de la Selva being part of Barcelona province, and all other municipalities falling inside Girona province. Also unusually, its capital, Santa Coloma de Farners, is no longer among its larger municipalities, with the coastal towns of Blanes and Lloret de Mar having far surpassed it in size.

Selva borders the comarques of Maresme, Vallès Oriental, Osona, Garrotxa, Gironès, and Baix Empordà.

Selva (actor)

Selva is an Indian film actor who has worked on Tamil-language films in leading and supporting roles. After appearing in several films as a lead actor in the 1990s, he made a comeback in two films directed by Mysskin in the 2010s.

Family and early life

Selva was born in Lakshmipuram, Theni district of Tamil Nadu in a Tamil family to D. C Varadharajan, a retired Police Officer and Andalu Pillai. His brother Rajasekhar, was also a leading actor who has appeared in Telugu language films. Selva grew up in Annanagar and attended Madras Christian College in Chetput.
