Select is the second studio album by Kim Wilde, released on May 10, 1982 via RAK label.

    Overview

The first single from this album, "Cambodia", was released in November 1981 and signalled a different sound from the Wilde camp, with an electronic and synth sound different from The Enid sound of her last album. The songs were again written by Marty and Ricky Wilde and produced by Ricky Wilde. The lyrics of the songs were similar to the first album: the second single "View from a Bridge" and the album track "Wendy Sadd" seemed to be about suicide, "Chaos at the Airport" described a nightmare about flying and "Ego" was quite the opposite of a lovesong. "Can You Come Over" was recorded at the Wilde's home. The cover image was a photograph from Gered Mankowitz.

This sequel to the debut album topped the charts in a host of European countries and hit #8 in Australia — although it did not surpass the success of its predecessor. The album was certified Silver in the UK.

    Select (SQL)

The SQL SELECT statement returns a result set of records from one or more tables.

A SELECT statement retrieves zero or more rows from one or more database tables or database views. In most applications, SELECT is the most commonly used data manipulation language (DML) command. As SQL is a declarative programming language, SELECT queries specify a result set, but do not specify how to calculate it. The database translates the query into a "query plan" which may vary between executions, database versions and database software. This functionality is called the "query optimizer" as it is responsible for finding the best possible execution plan for the query, within applicable constraints.

The SELECT statement has many optional clauses:

  • WHERE specifies which rows to retrieve.
  • GROUP BY groups rows sharing a property so that an aggregate function can be applied to each group.
  • HAVING selects among the groups defined by the GROUP BY clause.
  • ORDER BY specifies an order in which to return the rows.
  • Select (magazine)

Select was a United Kingdom music magazine of the 1990s which was particularly known for covering Britpop, a term coined in the magazine by Stuart Maconie. Its 1993 "Yanks Go Home" edition, featuring The Auteurs, Denim, Saint Etienne, Pulp and Suede's Brett Anderson on the cover in front of a Union Flag, was an important impetus in defining the movement's opposition to American genres such as grunge.

The magazine launched in 1990 and folded a decade later in 2000, mirroring the rise and decline of the Britpop scene with which it became synonymous.

SELECT (Electrical Contractors' Association of Scotland)

SELECT, founded in 1900 as the Electrical Contractors' Association of Scotland, is the Scottish construction trade association for specialist businesses in the electrical industry.

With the Unite the Union, SELECT established the Scottish Electrical Charitable Training Trust (SECTT), a not-for-profit organisation concerned with training apprentices within the SJIB Apprenticeship Scheme, the only industry-approved training scheme for electrical contracting apprenticeships in Scotland. The SJIB (Scottish Joint Industry Board) was co-founded in 1969 by SELECT and Unite the Union, then known as AMICUS.

Along with the NICEIC, SELECT is authorised by the Scottish Government to assess and register electricians who are competent to carry out and certify electrical installation work in Scotland in compliance with UK Building Regulations. SELECT was the first Scheme Provider for the Certification of Construction (Electrical Installations to BS 7671).

    Selcall

Selcall (selective calling) is a type of squelch protocol used in radio communications systems, in which transmissions include a brief burst of sequential audio tones. Receivers that are set to respond to the transmitted tone sequence will open their squelch, while others will remain muted.

Selcall is a radio signalling protocol mainly in use in Europe, Asia, Australia and New Zealand, and continues to be incorporated in radio equipment marketed in those areas.

    Details

The transmission of a selcall code involves the generation and sequencing of a series of predefined, audible tones. Both the tone frequencies, and sometimes the tone periods, must be known in advance by both the transmitter and the receiver. Each predefined tone represents a single digit. A series of tones therefore represents a series of digits that represents a number. The number encoded in a selcall burst is used to address one or more receivers. If the receiver is programmed to recognise a certain number, then it will un-mute its speaker so that the transmission can be heard; an unrecognised number is ignored and therefore the receiver remains muted.
