Section (United States land surveying)

In U.S. land surveying under the Public Land Survey System (PLSS), a section is an area nominally one square mile (2.6 square kilometers), containing 640 acres (260 hectares), with 36 sections making up one survey township on a rectangular grid.

The legal description of a tract of land under the PLSS includes the name of the state, name of the county, township number, range number, section number, and portion of a section. Sections are customarily surveyed into smaller squares by repeated halving and quartering. A quarter section is 160 acres (65 ha) and a "quarter-quarter section" is 40 acres (16 ha). In 1832 the smallest area of land that could be acquired was reduced to the 40-acre (16 ha) quarter-quarter section, and this size parcel became entrenched in American mythology. After the Civil War, Freedmen (freed slaves) were reckoned to be self-sufficient with "40 acres and a mule." In the 20th century real estate developers preferred working with 40-acre (16 ha) parcels. The phrases "front 40" and "back 40," referring to farm fields, indicate the front and back quarter-quarter sections of land.

Section (military unit)

A section is a military sub-subunit in some armies. In many armies, it might be a squad of 2-3 fireteams (i.e. seven to twelve soldiers). However, in France and armies based on the French model, it is the sub-division of a company (equivalent to a platoon).

Under the new structure of the infantry platoon, sections are made up of eight men divided into two four-man fireteams. Each fireteam consists of a team leader (corporal/lance-corporal), a marksman with enhanced optics, a grenadier with an M203 and an LSW operator with an F89 Minimi light support weapon.

At the start of World War I, the Australian Army used a section that consisted of 27 men including the section commander, who was a non-commissioned officer holding the rank of sergeant.

During World War II, a rifle section comprised ten soldiers with a corporal in command with a lance-corporal as his second-in-command. The corporal used an M1928 Thompson submachine gun, while one of the privates used a Bren gun. The other eight soldiers all used No.1 Mk.3 Lee–Enfield rifles with a bayonet and scabbard. They all carried two or three No.36 Mills bomb grenades.

The Act brings together various funding mechanisms for the country's community health facilities, such as migrant/seasonal farmworker health centers, healthcare for the homeless, health centers and health centers for residents of public housing. Previously, each of these organizations were provided grants under numerous other mechanisms.

Land, sometimes referred to as dry land, is the solid surface of the Earth that is not permanently covered by water. The vast majority of human activity occurs in land areas that support agriculture, habitat, and various natural resources.

Some life forms (including terrestrial plants and terrestrial animals) have developed from predecessor species that lived in bodies of water.

Areas where land meets large bodies of water are called coastal zones. The division between land and water is a fundamental concept to humans. The demarcation between land and water can vary by local jurisdiction and other factors. A maritime boundary is one example of a political demarcation. A variety of natural boundaries exist to help clearly define where water meets land. Solid rock landforms are easier to demarcate than marshy or swampy boundaries, where there is no clear point at which the land ends and a body of water has begun. Demarcation can further vary due to tides and weather.

Land (magazine)

Land is a Swedish weekly family magazine with a countryside focus. The magazine was established in 1971. The headquarters of the magazine is in Stockholm. It is published by the Federation of Swedish Farmers (LRF) and is distributed to all members of LRF. Eva Källström is the editor-in-chief of Land.

In 2009 Land was one of the best-selling Swedish magazines with a circulation of 224,000 copies.

Åland (electoral district)

Åland is an electoral district represented in the Parliament of Finland. It covers the autonomous administrative region of Åland, with a population of 26,711 (as of 2005). It is the smallest constituency in Finland, and the only one that only elects one member of parliament. The region is guaranteed a special status in Finnish law, whereby it will always have at least one representative even if its population would not entitle it to one.

Continental Finnish political parties do not operate in Åland, and instead the region has its own parties. Elections to the Parliament are contested through common lists.

The current member of parliament for Åland is Elisabeth Nauclér (Borgerlig allians).
