Dave Matthews Band

Dave Matthews Band (often abbreviated to DMB) is an American rock band that was formed in Charlottesville, Virginia in 1991. The founding members were singer-songwriter and guitarist Dave Matthews, bassist Stefan Lessard, drummer/backing vocalist Carter Beauford and saxophonist LeRoi Moore. Boyd Tinsley was added to the band as a violinist soon after the band was formed. Moore died suddenly in August 2008 due to complications from injuries sustained in an ATV accident. Grammy Award-winner Jeff Coffin (of Béla Fleck and the Flecktones) has since filled Moore's spot as the band's saxophonist. Rashawn Ross and Tim Reynolds have also become full-time touring members of the band. The band's 2009 album Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King (the first album since Moore's death) debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, earning the band their fifth consecutive number-one debut. Their most recent album, Away from the World, released in 2012, debuted at number one on the Billboard chart — making them the only group to have six consecutive studio albums debut in the top spot. As of 2010, the Dave Matthews Band has sold over 30 million records worldwide.

Secrets (post-hardcore band)

Secrets (stylized as SECRETS) is an American post-hardcore band from San Diego, California, formed in 2010. After being signed to Rise Records in 2011, Secrets released their debut full-length album, The Ascent, in January 2012. The record debuted at #3 on the Billboard Heatseekers Chart and became the first Velocity Records release to appear on the Billboard Top 200, debuting at #185.

After going through line-up changes in 2013, the band released their second album, Fragile Figures in July. The album was a success, selling over 10,000 copies in the first month and charting at #59 on the Billboard 200 chart.

History

Formation and The Ascent (2010–2012)

Secrets was formed from ex-A City Serene members, Xander Bourgeois, Marc Koch, Joe English, and Michael Sherman. The original line up of A City Serene soon dispersed after they were involved in a serious car accident, which left one member in a coma. They reformed as Secrets in 2010, and added Richard Rogers as their clean vocalist and rhythm guitarist. The band was quickly signed to Rise Records imprint, Velocity Records. Though they initially planned to release an EP, the band went ahead with a full-length album, The Ascent. This album was produced by Tom Denney, formerly of A Day to Remember.

Secrets (Allison Crowe album)

Secrets, released in 2004 (see 2004 in music), is the second studio album released by Allison Crowe and her first full-length CD. Following the dissolution of her trio, Crowe recorded this solo, singer-songwriter, collection in Nanaimo, British Columbia. She engineered the recording and assisted with production alongside Rainer Willeke of the Victoria, Canada-based r'n'b combo, Soul Station. Performing all vocals (lead and harmonies), piano and keyboards Crowe added acoustic guitar tracks and percussive 'thumps'.

Secrets contains 'old' fan favourites (some of which are radically redefined from earlier performances), newly penned songs, and a pair of personal picks from other artists: Counting Crows' "Raining in Baltimore" ~ the first song performed by Crowe when she launched her career as a singer-songwriter in the mid-'90s; and "Joan of Arc", a poem song from the pen of Leonard Cohen.

Dan Hibiki

Dan Hibiki (火引 弾, Hibiki Dan) is a player character from Capcom's Street Fighter fighting game franchise. He was created to parody Ryo Sakazaki and Robert Garcia, the two lead characters of SNK's Art of Fighting series, as Capcom saw Ryo as a ripoff of Street Fighter characters Ryu and Ken. Since then, Dan has become a fan favorite due to his humorous design, signature moves, and mannerisms.

Introduced in Street Fighter Alpha, Dan is consistently portrayed as an overconfident, arrogant, and utterly feeble character. In the series' storyline, Dan is a self-taught martial artist whose goal is to defeat Sagat, who killed Go, Dan's father, in a brutal fight that resulted in the loss of Sagat's right eye. After defeating Sagat, Dan opens an unsuccessful school for his fighting style, Saikyo-ryu ("Strongest style").

Appearances

Dan is introduced in Street Fighter Alpha and Street Fighter Alpha 2 as a martial artist who developed his own fighting style called Saikyō-ryū, "The Strongest Style", despite the considerable lack of power in his techniques. During these two games, Dan seeks to defeat Sagat to avenge his father's death. While Dan is an unlockable character in Street Fighter Alpha, in following games he is already available. By Street Fighter Alpha 3, Dan has succeeded in his quest, and seeks to perfect and promote his fighting style. In this game, he also declares himself the mentor from the fighter Sakura Kasugano and is revealed to be one of Blanka's friends.

Dan (rank)

The dan (段) ranking system is used by many Japanese organizations (and Korean martial arts) to indicate the level of one's ability (expertise) within a certain subject matter. As a ranking system, it was originally used at a go school during the Edo period. It is now also used in modern fine arts and martial arts.

The system was applied to martial arts in Japan by Kanō Jigorō (1860–1938), the founder of judo, in 1883, and later introduced to other East Asian countries. In the modern Japanese martial arts, holders of dan ranks often wear a black belt; those of higher rank may also wear red-and-white and red belts. Dan ranks are also given for strategic board games such as go, Japanese chess (shogi), and renju, as well as for cultural arts such as flower arrangement (ikebana), Japanese calligraphy (shodō) and tea ceremony (sadō).　

The Chinese character for the word dan (段) literally means step or stage in Japanese, but is also used to refer to one's rank or grade, i.e., one's degree or level of expertise. In Chinese pinyin, however, the same character is spelled duàn, and was originally used to mean phase. Dan is often used together with the word kyū (級) in certain ranking systems, with dan being used for the higher ranks and kyū being used for lower ranks.

Dan (cuneiform)

The cuneiform dan sign is a multi-use sign found in both the 14th century BC Amarna letters and the Epic of Gilgamesh. Besides dan, (and tan), the following are its uses (from Epic of Gilgamesh):

As sumerogram GURUŠ, it is only used for its Akkadian language meaning "eṭlu"-("young man"). Half of the spellings of eṭlu use GURUŠ combined with other signs, and half spell eṭlu alphabetically/syllabically. The quantities used for specific meanings of the sign, in the Epic of Gilgamesh are as follows: dan-(27), kal-(23), lab-(19), lap-(3), lép-(1), líb-(7), líp-(3), reb-(7), rib-(2), tan-(10), GURUŠ-(23).

Amarna letter use and "dan-is"

Combined with is, (is (cuneiform)), the Akkadian word dan-is, "danniš", meaning "greatly", "strongly", "fervently", etc. is used in the Amarna letters, especially from Mesopotamia, of Mitanni (King Tushratta), Babylon, and others. Tushratta's letter to Pharaoh, Amarna letter EA 19, Love and Gold uses many examples of danniš; also from Tushratta, EA 26 and EA 28.
