Birdy (Birdy album)

Birdy is the debut studio album by English musician Birdy, released on 4 November 2011 by Atlantic Records. The album includes the singles "Skinny Love", "Shelter", "People Help the People" and "1901".

Singles

"Skinny Love" was released on 30 January 2011 as the first single from the album, which was a cover of a song by American indie folk band Bon Iver. The cover reached a peak of number 17 on the UK Singles Chart.

"Shelter" was released as the second single from the album on 3 June 2011. The song covers a track by English indie pop group The xx and peaked at number 50 in the UK.

"People Help the People" was released as the album's third single on 28 October 2011. The song is a cover of the song by English indie rock band Cherry Ghost and peaked at number 33 in the UK.

"1901" was released in the UK on 9 March 2012 as the album's fourth and final single. It is a cover of the song by French indie rock band Phoenix.

Birdy (novel)

Birdy is the debut novel of William Wharton, who was more than 50 years old when it was published. It won the U.S. National Book Award in category First Novel.Birdy was a Pulitzer Prize finalist in 1980, ultimately losing to The Executioner's Song by Norman Mailer.

Birdy was adapted as a film of the same name, directed by Alan Parker and starring Matthew Modine and Nicolas Cage.

Naomi Wallace, a poet and playwright, adapted Birdy for the stage in 1997.

Jasmine Lucilla Elizabeth Jennifer van den Bogaerde (born 15 May 1996), better known by her stage name Birdy, is an English musician, singer and songwriter. She won the music competition Open Mic UK in 2008, at the age of 12. Her debut single, a version of Bon Iver's "Skinny Love", was her breakthrough, charting all across Europe and earning platinum certification six times in Australia. Her self-titled debut album, Birdy, was released on 7 November 2011 to similar success, peaking at number 1 in Australia, Belgium and the Netherlands. Her second studio album, Fire Within, was released 23 September 2013 in the UK and other surrounding countries.

Early life and education

Birdy was born on 15 May 1996, in Lymington, Hampshire, UK. Her father is Rupert Oliver Benjamin van den Bogaerde; her mother, the Hon. Sophie Patricia (née Roper-Curzon) is a concert pianist. Birdy learned to play the piano at the age of seven, and began writing her own music at the age of eight. Her parents were married in 1995 and have two other children: Jake, born in 1997, and Caitlin in 1999. Birdy studied at Brockenhurst College in Brockenhurst, a sixth form college in the New Forest, as of 2013. She sings and plays the piano. Her grandfather is Captain John Christopher Ingram Roper-Curzon, the 20th Baron Teynham and a member of the Peerage of England, and she grew up on the family estate near Lymington. Her great-uncle was the actor Sir Dirk Bogarde. Her great-great-great grandfather was Belgian, the rest of her ancestors were English and Scottish.

Scream (Six Flags)

Scream! is a tower ride at Six Flags Fiesta Texas in San Antonio, Texas and Six Flags New England in Agawam, Massachusetts. Designed by S&S Worldwide, Scream! shoots riders up in the air, drops them half of the way, brings them back up and drops them again. Both rides are nearly 20 stories high.

Six Flags Fiesta Texas

Scream at Six Flags Fiesta Texas in San Antonio, Texas opened on March 13, 1999, in the Rockville section of the park. It first opened with two towers, then on May 28, 1999, the third tower opened. It was the very first combo tower from S&S Power, combining the ride actions of both a Turbo Drop and Space Shot in one ride cycle. The ride was fabricated by Intermountain Lift, Inc.

Six Flags New England

Scream! at Six Flags New England in Agawam, Massachusetts opened in 1998, in the Main Street section as Hellevator, as painted red. Then in 2000 they expanded the ride to feature two more towers and painted the ride white. The two new towers can feature a Turbo Drop, Space Shot, and Double Shot modes, while the original tower can only operate the Turbo Drop mode.

Scream (band)

Scream is an American hardcore punk band from Bailey's Crossroads, Virginia originally active from 1981 to 1990. In 2009 the band reunited, and as of January 2012 were on tour in Europe.

Biography

Scream was formed in Northern Virginia in 1981 by singer Peter Stahl, his brother Franz Stahl on guitar, bassist Skeeter Thompson and drummer Kent Stax. They are considered one of the benchmark bands in the history of the Washington, D.C. hardcore music movement. Along with bands such as Minor Threat and Government Issue, Scream ultimately merged the attributes of the movement, which were blinding speed, heavy political and social connotations in the lyrics, unpretentiousness of attitude, and shunning of commercialism. Their music is faithful to the roots of rock, but spun itself into other genres by employing sounds that predate the raunchiness of grunge, while saluting reggae and speed metal. Scream hated the classification of bands into certain types and considered what they played as simply 'music.' Recording their music in the basement of the now legendary Inner Ear Studios in Arlington, Virginia, Scream became the first band on the Dischord label to release a whole album, Still Screaming, as opposed to singles or 12 inch EPs. Like the hardcore band Bad Brains, they could play clearly at breakneck speed, but also played mid-tempo songs like "American Justice" and "Hygiene," which were metal-tinged reggae.

Scream (Kelis song)

"Scream" is a song performed by American recording artist Kelis, taken from her fifth studio album, Flesh Tone. The up-tempo electro-dance, techno synthpop song was written by Kelis and Jean Baptiste, and co-written and produced by David Guetta and El Tocadisco. It was released in October 2010, as the album's third single by will.i.am music, to coincide with the European leg of the Kelis' All Hearts tour. It was mainly met with positive reception from music critics, who praised the song's genre-shifting production and the empowering message in Kelis' lyrics.

Described as a song which lends itself to live performances, "Scream" was compared to songs by Dutch disc-jockey Fedde Le Grand, although critics noted that Kelis' vocals were layered as opposed to sung. An accompanying music video was directed by Rankin, and features several different scenes based on fashion and colors. Kelis is seen in couture outfits and neon bodypaint, as well as running on a treadmill in a London estate. The video was also produced in digital 3-D. "Scream" was performed live on The Alan Titchmarsh Show and the Summer Sets concert series for Vevo. "Scream" became a minor hit in Belgium, where it reached top-twenty on the Flanders Ultratip chart.
