Scott McCloud

Scott McCloud (born Scott McLeod on June 10, 1960) is an American cartoonist and comics theorist. He is best known for his non-fiction books about comics, Understanding Comics (1993), Reinventing Comics (2000), and Making Comics (2006).

Early life

McCloud was born in 1960 in Boston, Massachusetts, and spent most of his childhood in Lexington, Massachusetts. He decided he wanted to be a comics artist in 1975, during his junior year in high school.

Syracuse University's Illustration program was closest to his career goals. He selected that school and major, and graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1982.

Artist and theorist

McCloud created the light-hearted science fiction/superhero comic book series Zot! in 1984, in part as a reaction to the increasingly grim direction that superhero comics were taking in the 1980s.

His other print comics include Destroy!! (a deliberately over-the-top, over-sized single-issue comic book, intended as a parody of formulaic superhero fights), the graphic novel The New Adventures of Abraham Lincoln (done with a mixture of computer-generated and manually drawn digital images), 12 issues writing DC Comics' Superman Adventures, the three-issue limited series Superman: Strength, and his 2015 graphic novel The Sculptor.

Girls Against Boys

Girls Against Boys are an American indie rock/post-hardcore band, formed in Washington, D.C. in 1988 and currently based in New York City.

Career

The group began as a side project of Eli Janney and Fugazi drummer Brendan Canty. Canty left the project by 1990 due to his commitments with Fugazi. Janney went on to recruit three former members of D.C. hardcore punk group Soulside—Scott McCloud, Johnny Temple and Alexis Fleisig—to complete the line-up.

Girls Against Boys are perhaps most notable for employing dual bass guitars, a rarity in rock music. Their second album, Venus Luxure No. 1 Baby, was a heavy yet nuanced entry into early 1990s post-hardcore. It was later performed live in its entirety as part of the All Tomorrow's Parties-curated Don't Look Back series, and at the 25th anniversary concert for Touch and Go Records held in Chicago in September 2006.

They provided music for the soundtrack to the film Series 7: The Contenders (2001) and one song for the soundtrack to the 1994 film Clerks. They also contributed the song "Freaks" to the soundtrack for the cult film Hedwig and the Angry Inch and covered the song "Boogie Wonderland" for the 1999 movie 200 Cigarettes; the band also appears in the film. The cover sounds highly similar to their song "Let Me Come Back". They have also contributed to soundtracks of the films Permanent Midnight, White Oleander, SubUrbia, Terror Firmer, Mallrats, the Psycho remake and Songs of the Witchblade.
