Scotland Yard

Scotland Yard (officially New Scotland Yard) is a metonym for the headquarters of the Metropolitan Police Service, the territorial police force responsible for policing most of London.

The name derives from the location of the original Metropolitan Police headquarters at 4 Whitehall Place, which had a rear entrance on a street called Great Scotland Yard. The Scotland Yard entrance became the public entrance to the police station, and over time the street and the Metropolitan Police became synonymous. The New York Times wrote in 1964 that just as Wall Street gave its name to New York's financial district, Scotland Yard became the name for police activity in London.

The force moved away from Great Scotland Yard in 1890, and the name New Scotland Yard was adopted for subsequent headquarters. The current New Scotland Yard is located on Broadway (51°29′55″N 0°07′59″W / 51.49861°N 0.13305°W / 51.49861; -0.13305 (New Scotland Yard (current, third location))Coordinates: 51°29′55″N 0°07′59″W / 51.49861°N 0.13305°W / 51.49861; -0.13305 (New Scotland Yard (current, third location))) in Victoria and has been the Metropolitan Police's headquarters since 1967. In 2013, it was announced that the force will move back to the Curtis Green Building, the former site of Scotland Yard, which is located on the Victoria Embankment in 2015, and will be renamed Scotland Yard.

Scotland Yard (band)

Scotland Yard is a pop rock group from Los Angeles, California: Scotland Yard began when Chris Hill began demoing songs in 1989 for a female fronted new wave pop group. In 1991 Kim Cahill responded to an out of date ad for a singer in a local industry trade magazine. The edgy pop rock sound from the duo would catch an ear in the Los Angeles and Orange county music scene.

Career

The addition of a live band and constant touring would break the band out of its Orange County home turf. Numerous compilations and college radio air play helped the band build a devoted following across the USA and overseas. Local live shows featured casino nights with play money, food and prizes, raffle giveaways and swag bags for the audiences. The band licensed merchandise for everything from T-shirts to candy bars.

After the second CD release, the band's revolving lineup and shifting influences lead to Hill and Cahill parting ways. The group was dissolved in January 2004 after the recording of their third and final studio collaboration.

Scotland Yard is a 1941 American crime drama film starring Nancy Kelly and Edmund Gwenn about a fugitive whose visage has been altered with plastic surgery. The movie was directed by Norman Foster. It is also known as Uncensored.

Plot Summary

When bank robber Dakin Barrolles is on the run from the police, he manages to sneak into the house of respectable Sir John Lasher and his wife Sandra. He finds the drunken Sir Lasher in the course verbally abusing his wife, fearing his upcoming military service.

Barolles tells the banker off, then robs the couple of their car and a special locket with pictures of the couple inside. Unfortunately, Barrolles is caught as he is about to leave the house, by Inspector Henry James Cork of the Scotland Yard. Barrolles manages to escape once again from the inspector, and disappears into the night.

Some time later Cork finally manages to track the robber down, discovering that he enlisted under a false name and became a respected soldier in her Majesty's Army. Corks intelligence says that Barrolles was killed at Dunkerque, but he is in fact still alive. His face was terribly misfigured diring battle and he was sent to a hospital in Scotland to recover.

Scotland Yard is a 1930 American crime film directed by William K. Howard and written by Garrett Fort. The film stars Edmund Lowe, Joan Bennett, Donald Crisp, Georges Renavent, Lumsden Hare and David Torrence. The film was released on October 19, 1930, by Fox Film Corporation.

Scotland Yard is a board game in which a team of players, as police, cooperate to track down a player controlling a criminal around a board representing the streets of London. It is named after Scotland Yard, the headquarters of London's Metropolitan Police Service. Scotland Yard is an asymmetric board game, with the detective players cooperatively solving a variant of the pursuit-evasion problem. The game is published by Ravensburger in most of Europe and Canada and by Milton Bradley in the United States. It received the Spiel des Jahres (Game of the Year) award in 1983. A sequel to Scotland Yard was released called "Mister X".

Gameplay

One player controls "Mr. X", a criminal whose location is only revealed periodically, and the other players each control a detective, which is always present on the board.
