SC Heerenveen

Sportclub Heerenveen (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈspɔrtklʏp ˌɦeːrə(n)ˈveːn]; Frisian: Sportklub It Hearrenfean) is a Dutch football club currently playing in the Eredivisie, the top level of football in the Netherlands.

History

Sportclub Heerenveen was founded on 20 July 1920 in the town of Heerenveen, Friesland, as Athleta. They changed name twice, first to Spartaan, and then to v.v. Heerenveen in 1922. Whilst the Netherlands was occupied by Germany Heerenveen won three successive North of the Netherlands championships, and following the end of the Second World War they went on to win the same title six times in a row; the club's dominance partly ascribed to the presence of Abe Lenstra. During this period Lenstra led Heerenveen to a famous victory over AFC Ajax in one of the most noted games in Dutch domestic football history. Trailing 1–5 with 25 minutes remaining, the Frisian team inexplicably fought back for a 6–5 victory.

During the 1950s, Heerenveen regional dominance faded and after Dutch football turned professional Lenstra left to join Sportclub Enschede, before the club he departed was relegated to the Tweede Divisie. By the end of the decade, Heerenveen were in the Eerste Divisie, but they found themselves relegated again. In 1969–1970, the Frisian club won the Tweede Divisie to return to the Eerste Divisie and for two seasons in the 1970s, the club was close to achieving promotion to the Eredivisie. By 1974 the club were in financial trouble and to ensure survival was split into amateur and professional sections, the professional part being renamed sc Heerenveen.

SC Heerenveen (women)

SC Heerenveen Vrouwen is a Dutch women's football from Heerenveen representing SC Heerenveen in the women's Eredivisie.

Founded in 2007, Heerenveen was a founding member of the Vrouwen Eredivisie. After ending last in 2008 and 2010 and second-to-last in 2009, in 2011 it attained its best result yet, ending 4th and reaching the national cup final, lost against AZ Alkmaar. In April 2011 the club announced the women's team would be disbanded following the end of the season, but it subsequently cancelled the decision. The following season Heerenveen returned to the bottom of the table, ending last.

In the 2012-13 season Heerenveen moved in the newly founded BeNe League. It was the second-to-last Dutch team in the championship, an overall 11th position.

Heerenveen

Heerenveen (Dutch pronunciation: [ˌɦeːrə(n)ˈveːn], West Frisian: It Hearrenfean [ət ˌjɛrn̩ˈfɪən]) is a town and municipality in the province of Friesland (Fryslan), in the north of the Netherlands.

History

The town was established in 1551 by three lords as a location for the purpose of digging peat which was used for fuel, hence the name (heer is "lord", veen is "peat"). Heerenveen was not one of the traditional eleven cities in Friesland (Fryslan) as it did not have so-called city rights. However, it is now one of the larger municipalities of the province.

The windmill Welgelegen or Tjepkema's Molen is the only survivor of seventeen which have stood in Heerenveen.
