Saw V

Saw V is a 2008 Canadian-Americanhorror film directed by David Hackl and written by Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan and stars Tobin Bell, Costas Mandylor, Scott Patterson, Betsy Russell, Mark Rolston, Julie Benz, Carlo Rota, and Meagan Good. It is the fifth installment of the Saw franchise, and was released on October 23, 2008 in Australia and October 24, 2008 in North America.

David Hackl, who served as the production designer of Saw II, Saw III, and Saw IV, and second-unit director for Saw III and Saw IV made his directorial debut with Saw V. Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan, the writers of the previous film, returned to write the film. Charlie Clouser, who provided the score for all previous Saw films, also returned to compose the score for the film. Saw creators James Wan and Leigh Whannell served as executive producers.

The film focuses primarily on the events that led up to Detective Mark Hoffman becoming an apprentice of the Jigsaw Killer, as well as his efforts to prevent anyone else from learning his secret.

Saw V: Original Motion Picture Score is the film score to Saw V. The released score has 61 tracks, nine of which are alternates. Out of the 61 released tracks, 49 were featured in the film.

Like the Saw IV score, it was not licensed to a recording company and not commercially distributed.

Recycled Tracks

A number of tracks from the previous films were re-used, some replacing unreleased original tracks. The majority of the tracks were from Saw III and Saw IV.

History

Only condensed versions of eight tracks were released on the original soundtrack ("Trap Attack" and "What It Takes"), and three parts of the end theme were played on special features section of the DVD.

Despite featuring the majority of the score, several tracks were not released. Most obviously is the film version of "Pendulum", the music track that plays when Jill tells Erickson she suspects Strahm is following her, the scene prior to the Bathtub Trap, and Hoffman's conversation with Jigsaw in the sickroom. The latter two scenes contained recycled tracks from previous films. Several tracks featured on the Evolution Music Partners listing were also not released.

Critical reaction

The soundtrack was well received. Spence D. from IGN.com said that "From start to finish the Saw V soundtrack flows with a sense of purpose and cohesion, the tracks having a unifying dark undercurrent that makes for a electric shocked jolting mixtape with dark intent." He then gave the album a "good" 7.9/10. Bloggernews.net's Zach Freeman gave the soundtrack a A- and further said "This album is a solid mix of score and soundtrack that is not as heavy as it might be perceived."
