Savona

Savona [saˈvoːna]  listen  (Ligurian: Sann-a [ˈsaŋːa] French: Savone) is a seaport and comune in the northern Italian region of Liguria, capital of the Province of Savona, in the Riviera di Ponente on the Mediterranean Sea.

Savona used to be one of the chief seats of the Italian iron industry, having iron-works and foundries, shipbuilding, railway workshops, engineering shops, and a brass foundry.

One of the most celebrated former inhabitants of Savona was the navigator Christopher Columbus, who farmed land in the area while chronicling his journeys. 'Columbus's house', a cottage situated in the Savona hills, lay between vegetable crops and fruit trees. It is one of several residences in Liguria associated with Columbus.

History

Inhabited in ancient times by Ligures tribes, it came under Roman influence in c. 180 BC, after the Punic wars in which the city had been allied to Carthage. At the fall of the Western Roman Empire, it passed under Lombard rule in 641 AD (being destroyed in the attack) after a short period as an Ostrogoth and then Byzantine possession. Later it recovered as county seat in the Carolingian Empire. In the 10th century its bishops were counts of Savona, but later the countship passed to the marquesses of Monferrato (981) and afterwards to the marquesses Del Vasto (1084).

Savona, New York

Savona is a village in Steuben County, New York, United States. The population was 822 at the 2000 census. The village is named after Savona in Italy.

The Village of Savona is located in the eastern part of the Town of Bath. The village is located at the intersection of Routes 226, 415, and Interstate 86.

History

The name "Mud Creek" was associated with the village in the 19th Century. The village was incorporated in 1883.

Unwanted attention was brought to the village in 1993 by the slaying of a young boy, Derrick Robie, aged four, by [then] thirteen-year-old Eric Smith.

Geography

Savona is located at 42°17′7″N 77°13′8″W / 42.28528°N 77.21889°W / 42.28528; -77.21889 (42.285283, -77.218814).

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.0 square mile (2.6 km²), all of it land.

The village is next to the Cohocton River at the confluence of Mud Creek and is at the intersection of New York State Route 226 and New York State Route 415.

Sandford Lake is a small lake north of the village.

Province of Savona

The province of Savona (Italian: provincia di Savona; Ligurian: provinsa de Sann-a) is a province in the Liguria region of Italy. Its capital is the city of Savona, which has a population of 61,529 inhabitants. The province has a total population of 282,607 inhabitants over a surface area of 1,546.29 square kilometres (597.03 sq mi), giving it a population density of 182.77 inhabitants per square kilometre. The provincial president is Monica Giuliano.

History

Savona was first settled by the Ligurian tribe, the Sabazi, who supported the Carthaginians in the Punic Wars. This support of the Carthaginian Empire led to Savona being conquered by the Roman Empire. During the Middle Ages, Savona allied with Frederick II, Holy Roman Emperor and fought against Genoa. In 1440 it also fought against Genoa during its war against the Visconti of Milan; in response, Genoa sacked the city and destroyed the port and shipping. It allied itself with the French in the 16th century, but this campaign also failed and resulted in Genoa invading the area again, this time destroying three loaded ships and the port.
