Savage Grace

Savage Grace is a 2007 film directed by Tom Kalin and written by Howard A. Rodman, based on the book Savage Grace by Natalie Robins and Steven M.L. Aronson. The story is based on the dysfunctional, allegedly incestuous relationship between heiress and socialite Barbara Daly Baekeland and her son, Antony. The film stars Julianne Moore, Stephen Dillane, Eddie Redmayne, Elena Anaya, and Hugh Dancy.

It was an official selection at the 2007 London Film Festival, the 2007 Sundance Film Festival and the 2007 Cannes Film Festival.

Plot

The film is based on the true story of Barbara Daly Baekeland (Moore), her husband Brooks Baekeland (Dillane), heir to the Bakelite plastics fortune, and their only child Antony (Redmayne), who was diagnosed with schizophrenia. The story begins with Antony's birth and follows the family to the time of his arrest for the murder of his mother.

Critical reception

Critics gave the film mixed reviews. The review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes reported that 38 percent of critics gave the film positive reviews, based on 89 reviews — with the consensus that "though visually compelling, the lamentable characters in Savage Grace make for difficult viewing."Metacritic, another review aggregator, reported the film had an average score of 51 out of 100, based on 28 reviews.

Savage Grace (metal band)

Savage Grace was a power/speed metal band from Los Angeles, California, formed by Chris Logue and Brian East (nicknamed "The Beast", from the Pacific Northwest band Alleybrat), active between 1981 and 1993. They reformed in 2009, and subsequently released an EP entitled The Lost Grace. In 2010, they performed at the Up the Hammers, Bang Your Head!!! and Keep It True festivals.

Biography

Their original name was Marquis de Sade, named after the French aristocrat of the same name who also lent his name to the word sadist. They would later change their name to Savage Grace after the great 70's rock band led by Ron Koss that were on Warner/Reprise Records. Their first demos were recorded with Ozzy Osbourne's guitarist Randy Rhoads' brother Kelle on vocals. Randy had suggested the name Savage Grace to Kelle.

Metal Blade would select the song "Scepters of Deceit" from a 3 song demo for their 1982 Metal Massacre II compilation, with Dwight Cliff taking over vocals from Rhoads.

Savage Grace (progressive rock band)

Savage Grace was Detroit, Michigan's progressive rock band of the late 1960s. With Guitarist Ron Koss, keyboardist John Seanor, and drummer Larry Zack as the nucleus of a jazzy trio called Scarlet Letter (with two albums on Mainstream), the addition of vocalist/bassist Al Jacquez transformed the group into Savage Grace. The band was soon signed to Reprise and released their eponymous debut album in 1969. Upon moving to Los Angeles the following year, the group embarked on a second album, which took almost two years to complete. By 1972, the trail had ended and the group went their separate ways. Savage Grace never achieved the success that seemed like their due; certainly their musicianship was top notch and their songwriting was good enough, but in the long run, was also perhaps a bit too eclectic to find a mainstream audience.

Biography

The beginnings of this seminal Michigan band starts on the east side of Detroit in the late 1960s. Session guitarist Ron Koss, a self-taught musician who paid his dues in the local bar scene and recorded sessions with Wilson Pickett, Marv Johnson, and Hank Marvin and the Midnighters, joined forces with classically trained keyboardist John Seanor and rock drummer / percussionist Larry Zack to form the core of “The Scarlet Letter.” The trio decided to find a bass player who could sing and Ann Arborite Al Jacquez was added on lead vocals and bass.
