Dave Pike

David Samuel Pike (March 23, 1938 – October 3, 2015) was a jazz vibraphone and marimba player. He appears on many Herbie Mann albums as well as those by Bill Evans, Nick Brignola, Paul Bley and Kenny Clarke. He also recorded extensively as leader, including a number of albums on MPS Records.

Biography

He learned drums at the age of eight and was self-taught on vibes. Pike made his recording debut with the Paul Bley Quartet in 1958. He began putting an amplifier on his vibes when working with flautist Herbie Mann in the early 1960s. By the late 1960s, Pike's music became more exploratory, contributing a unique voice and new contexts that pushed the envelope in times remembered for their exploratory nature. Doors of Perception, released in 1970 for the Atlantic Records subsidiary Vortex Records and produced by former boss Herbie Mann, explored ballads, modal territory, musique concrète, with free and lyrical improvisation, and included musicians like alto saxophonist Lee Konitz, bassist Chuck Israels and pianist Don Friedman.

Sausalito, California

Sausalito is a San Francisco Bay Area city in Marin County, California. Sausalito is 8 miles (13 km) south-southeast of San Rafael, at an elevation of 13 feet (4 m). The population was 7,061 as of the 2010 census. The community is situated near the northern end of the Golden Gate Bridge, and prior to the building of that bridge served as a terminus for rail, car, and ferry traffic. Developed rapidly as a shipbuilding center in World War II, the city's industrial character gave way in postwar years to a reputation as a wealthy and artistic enclave, a picturesque residential community (incorporating large numbers of houseboats), and a tourist destination. It is adjacent to, and largely bounded by, the protected spaces of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.

Etymology

The name of Sausalito comes from Spanish sauzalito, meaning "small willow grove", from sauce "willow" + collective derivative -al meaning "place of abundance" + diminutive suffix -ito; with orthographic corruption from z to s due to seseo; early variants of the name were Saucelito, San Salita, San Saulito, San Salito, Sancolito, Sancilito, Sousolito, Sousalita, Sousilito, Sausilito, and Sauz Saulita.

Sausalito (song)

"Sausilito" was the first single for Netherlands based singing duo Rosy & Andres. It was written by Andres Holten and Marshal Manengkei. In the Netherlands it peaked at no 7 and spent four weeks on the charts.

History

Rosy Pereira had previously recorded as Babe Pereira. She is also the daughter of Indonesian steel guitarist Coy Pereira. Andres is a Dutch singer, songwriter of Indonesian descent. In 1972, he represented the Netherlands at the 1972 Eurovision Song Contest. Previously he was part of the duo Sandra & Andres. In June 1977, Rosy & Andres were sent to Romania along with singers Therese Steinmetz and Conny Vink and a violin duo made up of Sem Vijveen & Benny Behr. They were on a five day visit. "Sausilito" was sung in Romanian and the title changed to "Bucaresti".
