Sato (dog)

Sato is a Puerto Rican slang term referring to a mixed breed dog. Due to a combination of economic, social, and cultural factors, Puerto Rico has a terrible problem of animal overpopulation, abandonment, abuse, and neglect, meaning that abandoned satos can be found everywhere, struggling to survive on the streets, beaches, and commercial centers. Because of satos' out-of-control numbers and people's view of them as a public menace and health hazard, they are sometimes the victims of abuse such as burning and drowning.

While satos come in a variety of shapes and sizes, they are often small to medium-sized, with large ears and stubby legs. They are highly intelligent, healthy, and loyal, making them excellent companion dogs.

Many organizations, such as Animal Lighthouse Rescue, Save a Sato Foundation, All Sato Rescue, Island Dog, El Faro de los Animales, Amigos de los Animales, ARF of Mercer, and "Buffalo Sato Rescue, are dedicated to rescuing abused and abandoned satos and finding homes for them through shelters on the U.S. mainland. Because of these efforts, satos are becoming more and more popular pets in the United States.

Dogū

Dogū (土偶)(meaning "clay figures") are small humanoid and animal figurines made during the late Jōmon period (14,000–400 BC) of prehistoric Japan. Dogū come exclusively from the Jōmon period. By the Yayoi period, which followed the Jōmon period, Dogū were no longer made. There are various styles of Dogū, depending on exhumation area and time period. According to the National Museum of Japanese History, the total number found throughout Japan is approximately 15,000. Dogū were made across all of Japan, except Okinawa. Most of the Dogū have been found in eastern Japan and it is rare to find one in western Japan. The purpose of the Dogū remains unknown and should not be confused with the clay haniwa funerary objects of the Kofun period (250 – 538).

Origins

Some scholars theorize the Dogū acted as effigies of people, that manifested some kind of sympathetic magic. For example, it may have been believed that illnesses could be transferred into the Dogū, then destroyed, clearing the illness, or any other misfortune.

The Dog (狗) is one of the 12-year cycle of animals which appear in the Chinese zodiac related to the Chinese calendar. The Year of the Dog is associated with the Earthly Branch symbol 戌. The character 狗 refers to the actual animal while 戌 refers to the zodiac animal.

Dog in Chinese mythology

Dogs are an important motif in Chinese mythology. These motifs include a particular dog which accompanies a hero, the dog as one of the twelve totem creatures for which years are named, a dog giving first provision of grain which allowed current agriculture, and claims of having a magical dog as an original ancestor in the case of certain ethnic groups.

SATO 48

SATO (Springfield and the Ozarks) 48 is an annual contest held in Springfield, Missouri. The event challenges local filmmakers to create a five-minute short film from scratch over the course of 48 hours beginning on April 15 and terminating on April 17. No production may take place before an inspiration package is distributed at a kick-off event. Each film entry must then be conceived, written, directed, edited, output, and delivered directly to the festival heads within the specified 48-hour period.

The short films are then premiered and showcased at a local theatre, and are later evaluated by an international panel of judges who decide which films receive awards and nominations.

Inspiration package

At the launch event, the organizers provide to each team an “inspiration package” which contains specific elements the film must include. These elements can include anything from a prop to a character to a line of dialogue to an idea or concept.
