Sathya (film)

Sathya is a 1988 Tamil-language Indian feature film directed by Suresh Krissna and produced by Kamal Haasan starring Kamal Haasan himself along with Amala. The film was remake from the 1985 Hindi film Arjun. The film is the debut directional venture for Suresh Krishna. The film completed a 150-day run at the box office. The cinematography and editing were handled by S. M. Anwar and N. R. Kittu respectively.

Plot

Sathya (Kamal Hassan) is a young man who wants to make a difference and ends up becoming a henchman to a political leader who has his own agenda.

The film was a remake of Hindi film Arjun directed by Rahul Rawail and starring Sunny Deol.Sathya marked the directorial debut of Suresh Krishna who earlier assisted K. Balachander.S. P. Balasubrahmanyam lent his voice for Kitty who played the negative role in the film.

Soundtrack

The film's music was composed by Ilaiyaraaja and lyrics were penned by Vaali. Ilaiyaraaja had originally composed the number Valayosai for one of his studio albums, and on Kamal Haasan's insistence, included it in Sathya.

Satya

Satya is the Sanskrit word for truth. It also refers to a virtue in Indian religions, referring to being truthful in one's thought, speech and action. In Yoga, satya is one of five yamas, the virtuous restraint from falsehood and distortion of reality in one's expressions and actions.

Etymology

In the Vedas and later sutras, the meaning of the word satya (सत्य) evolves into an ethical concept about truthfulness and is considered an important virtue. It means being true and consistent with reality in one's thought, speech and action.

A related concept, sattva, also derived from "sat", means true essence, nature, spiritual essence, character. Sattva is also a guṇa, a psychology concept particularly in the Samkhya school of philosophy, where it means goodness, purity, clean, positive, one that advances good true nature of self.

Vedic literature

Satya is a central theme in the Vedas, states Hindery. It is equated with and considered necessary to the concept Ṛta (Sanskrit ऋतं ṛtaṃ) – that which is properly joined, order, rule, nature, balance, harmony. Ṛta results from Satya in the Vedas, states Holdrege, as it regulates and enables the operation of the universe and everything within it. Satya (truth) is considered essential, and without it, the universe and reality falls apart, cannot function.

Sathya (actor)

Sathya is an Indian film actor, who has worked in Tamil language films. Brother of actor Arya, he first began filming for Kadhal 2 Kalyanam in 2008, though the film remains unreleased. After débuting in Puthagam (2013), he made a breakthrough in Jeeva Shankar's romantic drama film Amara Kaaviyam (2014).

Career

Both Arya and Sathya went through many scripts before selecting the script of Kadhal 2 Kalyanam for the latter to make his acting début, in which Sathya would be playing the role of a radio jockey. Sathya, after being assigned for the role, had visited Bollywood actor Anupam Kher's acting school in Mumbai to "hone his acting skills", before starting to shoot, besides sitting with and observing professional radio jockeys at a radio station. The film, co-starring Divya Spandana began production in October 2008, but has languished in production hell, prompting Puthagam to become his first release. The film, directed by Vijay Adiraj, opened in January 2013 to mixed reviews with a critic noting Sathya "tries to imitate his more famous brother Arya and needs improvement in all departments". After a lukewarm response to his début, Arya chose to produce Sathya's next film, Jeeva Shankar's romantic drama film Amara Kaaviyam (2014). Sathya played a school boy named Jeeva, a character that required him to shed more than 10 kg, and featured in the film based on a real event. The film garnered positive reviews from screenings prior to release and had a successful soundtrack composed by Mohamaad Ghibran, prompting a wide release in September 2014. Sathya earned mixed reviews for his work in the film with a critic from The Hindu noting "he grows into the role", while another reviewer noted "he is convincing when he has to be a brooding young man but is unable to be expressive when it comes to the romantic and emotional scenes."

Film (film)

Film is a 1965 film written by Samuel Beckett, his only screenplay. It was commissioned by Barney Rosset of Grove Press. Writing began on 5 April 1963 with a first draft completed within four days. A second draft was produced by 22 May and a forty-leaf shooting script followed thereafter. It was filmed in New York in July 1964.

Beckett’s original choice for the lead – referred to only as “O” – was Charlie Chaplin, but his script never reached him. Both Beckett and the director Alan Schneider were interested in Zero Mostel and Jack MacGowran. However, the former was unavailable and the latter, who accepted at first, became unavailable due to his role in a "Hollywood epic." Beckett then suggested Buster Keaton. Schneider promptly flew to Los Angeles and persuaded Keaton to accept the role along with "a handsome fee for less than three weeks' work."James Karen, who was to have a small part in the film, also encouraged Schneider to contact Keaton.

The filmed version differs from Beckett's original script but with his approval since he was on set all the time, this being his only visit to the United States. The script printed in Collected Shorter Plays of Samuel Beckett (Faber and Faber, 1984) states:

Lubrication theory

In fluid dynamics, lubrication theory describes the flow of fluids (liquids or gases) in a geometry in which one dimension is significantly smaller than the others. An example is the flow above air hockey tables, where the thickness of the air layer beneath the puck is much smaller than the dimensions of the puck itself.

Internal flows are those where the fluid is fully bounded. Internal flow lubrication theory has many industrial applications because of its role in the design of fluid bearings. Here a key goal of lubrication theory is to determine the pressure distribution in the fluid volume, and hence the forces on the bearing components. The working fluid in this case is often termed a lubricant.

Free film lubrication theory is concerned with the case in which one of the surfaces containing the fluid is a free surface. In that case the position of the free surface is itself unknown, and one goal of lubrication theory is then to determine this. Surface tension may then be significant, or even dominant. Issues of wetting and dewetting then arise. For very thin films (thickness less than one micrometre), additional intermolecular forces, such as Van der Waals forces or disjoining forces, may become significant.
