Norwegian coach Bjørnar Håkensmoen gave Sara Renner a ski pole after hers was broken when a competitor stepped on it during the cross-country team sprint at the 2006 Winter Olympics. Norway's athlete ended up fourth, implying that this selfless act of sportsmanship may well have cost the Norwegian team a medal.[1] Renner gave Håkensmoen a bottle of wine as a thank you, while other Canadians responded with phone calls and letters to the Norwegian Embassy. Canadian businessman Michael Page donated 8,000 cans of Maple Syrup to the Norwegian Olympic Committee to show his gratitude.[2] The incident was immortalized in a 2010 Winter Olympics television commercial.[3]

Famous quotes by Sara Renner:

"It was a solid performance today and I'm satisfied, but I now suspect a lot more of myself. After finishing sixth in this event in Canmore, I know I can consistently be in the top 10 and fight for a podium spot so I have to get better."
"This is just great timing for me with the Olympics less than a week away. Plus I also have to keep up with the rookie."
"The worst thing I could have done was panic and start screaming. Luckily, I got a pole right away. It was a bit long, but it was manageable."
"It's not the best thing to happen but at the same time you can't give up."
"We knew we had a chance. But we didn't get up in the morning with a do-or-die, win-or-die mindset about the race."
"We just need something in the morning to get us moving."
"You walk a fine line when you put someone on a list and they're innocent. I think the media is really misinformed and looking for a doping scandal, and it isn't a doping scandal. Unfortunately, there are people who are passed as dopers who aren't doping. The have to have a better test. It's not good enough, and it's not fair for people who work really hard and have naturally high levels."
"We're definitely competitors. But once the races are over we're best friends. When we're teaming together I expect the best out of her and she expects the best out of me."
"Thomas will retire this year so it's a decision both of us will make together."
"All of a sudden, I was kind of flapping one arm. The next thing I knew, there were three racers in front of me."
