Maria Island is a mountainous island located in the Tasman Sea, off the east coast of Tasmania, Australia. The 115.5-square-kilometre (44.6 sq mi) island is contained with the Maria Island National Park, which includes a marine area of 18.78 square kilometres (7.25 sq mi) off the island's northwest coast. The island is about 20 kilometres (12 mi) in length from north to south and, at its widest, is about 13 kilometres (8.1 mi) west to east. At its closest point, Point Lesueur, the island lies approximately 4 kilometres (2.5 mi) off the east coast of Tasmania.
Tasmanians pronounce the name /məˈraɪ.ə/ mə-RY-ə, as did the early British settlers but the original pronunciation was /məˈriː.ə/ mə-REE-ə. The island was named in 1642 by Dutch explorer Abel Tasman after Maria van Diemen (née van Aelst), wife of Anthony van Diemen, the Governor-General of the Dutch East Indies in Batavia. The island was known as Maria's Isle in the early 19th century.
The strait between Maria Island and the east coast of mainland Tasmania is called Mercury Passage and was named after the ship HMS Mercury, commanded by John Henry Cox, who charted the area in 1789. There are two towns of size in this part of the East Coast: Orford at the mouth of the Prosser River and Triabunna, some 8 kilometres (5.0 mi) further north at the head of Spring Bay.
Maria Atoll is an uninhabited small atoll of the Tuamotu group in French Polynesia. It is located in the far southeast of the archipelago, about 72 km southwest from Marutea Sud. Maria's closest neighbour is the small atoll of Matureivavao of the Acteon Group, 56 km to the northwest.
Maria Atoll is oval in shape and bound by a continuous reef. It is 5.6 km long and 2.9 km wide. Its islands are low and flat and the lagoon is hypersaline.
This atoll is mostly called "Maria Est" in order to avoid confusion with another small atoll called Maria (Nororotu) in the Tubuai (Austral Islands) division of French Polynesia.
The first recorded European who arrived to Maria Est was Jacques-Antoine Moerenhout in 1829. In some maps, Maria Atoll appeared as "Moerenhout Island". In 1850, it was inhabited by about 40 indigenous people.
Administratively, Maria Est belongs to the commune of the Gambier Islands.

Santa Maria,
Insel die aus Träumen geboren.
Ich habe meine Sinne verloren,
in dem Fieber, das wie Feuer brennt.
Santa Maria,
nachts an deinen schneeweißen Stränden
Hielt ich ihre Jugend in den Händen
Glück für das man keinen Namen kennt.
Sie war ein Kind der Sonne,
Schön wie ein erwachender Morgen.
Heiß war ihr stolzer Blick
Doch tief in ihrem Inneren verborgen,
Brannte die Sehnsucht - Santa Maria
Den Schritt zu wagen - Santa Maria
Vom Mädchen bis zur Frau.
umdada,...
Santa Maria,
Insel die aus Träumen geboren,
Ich hab meine Sinne verloren,
in dem Fieber, das wie Feuer brennt.
Santa Maria,
ihre Wildheit ließ mich erleben,
Mit ihr auf bunten Flügeln entschweben,
In ein fernes unbekanntes Land.
Wehrlos trieb ich dahin
Im Zauber ihres Lächelns gefangen.
Doch als der Tag erwacht
Sah ich die Tränen auf ihren Wangen,
Morgen hieß Abschied - Santa Maria
Und meine Heimat - Santa Maria
War so unendlich weit!
umdada, ...
Santa Maria,
Insel die aus Träumen geboren
Ich hab meine Sinne verloren,
in dem Fieber, das wie Feuer brennt.
Niemals mehr hab ich so empfunden,
Wie im Rausch der nächtlichen Stunden
