Silbervogel

Silbervogel, German for silver bird, was a design for a liquid-propellant rocket-powered sub-orbital bomber produced by Eugen Sänger and Irene Bredt in the late 1930s for The Third Reich/Nazi Germany. It is also known as the RaBo (Raketenbomber or "rocket bomber"). It was one of a number of designs considered for the Amerika Bomber mission, which started out in the spring of 1942 being focused solely on trans-Atlantic range piston-engined strategic bombers, like the Messerschmitt Me 264 and Junkers Ju 390, the only two airframe types actually built and flown for the competition. When Walter Dornberger attempted to create interest in military spaceplanes in the United States after World War II, he chose the more diplomatic term antipodal bomber.

Concept

The design was a significant one, as it incorporated new rocket technology, and the principle of the lifting body, foreshadowing future development of winged spacecraft such as the X-20 Dyna-Soar of the 1960s and the Space Shuttle of the 1970s. In the end, it was considered too complex and expensive to produce. The design never went beyond mock up test.

Sanger is located at 33°21′47″N 97°10′34″W / 33.36306°N 97.17611°W / 33.36306; -97.17611 (33.363068, -97.176212).

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 10.9 square miles (28.3 km²), of which 10.9 square miles (28.2 km²) is land and 0.04 square miles (0.1 km²), or 0.45%, is water.

The climate in this area is characterized by hot, humid summers and generally mild to cool winters. According to the Köppen Climate Classification system, Sanger has a humid subtropical climate, abbreviated "Cfa" on climate maps.

Demographics

The population in 1980 was 2,574, an increase of 60.6% since 1970. In 1990, the population was 3,508, and the city's population in 2010 was 6,916. As of the census of 2000, there were 4,534 persons, 1,645 households and 1,220 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,441.9 people per square mile (557.5/km²). There were 1,750 housing units at an average density of 556.5 per square mile (215.2/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 89.08% White, 3.04% African American, 1.10% Native American, 0.13% Asian, 4.19% from other races, and 2.45% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 11.31% of the population.

Sangar (fortification)

A sangar (or sanger) (Persian: سنگر‎‎) is a temporary fortified position with a breastwork originally constructed of stones, and now built of sandbags and similar materials. Sangars are normally constructed in terrain where the digging of trenches would not be practicable. The term is still frequently used by the British Army.

The word was adopted from Hindi and Pashto and derives originally from the Persian word sang, "stone". Its first appearance in English (as recorded by the Oxford English Dictionary) is in the form sunga, and dates from 1841.

Traditional usage

The term was originally used by the British Indian Army to describe small temporary fortified positions on the North West Frontier and in Afghanistan. It was widely used by the British during the Italian Campaign of World War II.

Modern usage
