Damian of Albania

Archbishop Damian (Albanian: Kryepeshkop Damian, secular name Dhimitër Kokoneshi; 1886 - 8 October 1973, Pogradec) was the bishop of the Orthodox Autocephalous Church of Albania from April 1966 until February 1967, when the religion was abolished in Albania.

Life

Kokoneshi was born in 1886 in the village of Llëngë in Mokër region, (part of then Ottoman Empire), near Pogradec in today's Albania. He was of Vlach descent. His early education included attending the Normal School of Monastir in 1896 and the Academy of Theology in Ioannina in 1925.

On November 27, 1918, the Émigré Albanian Orthodox clerics sent a signed petition to the U.S. President, then Woodrow Wilson, asking for support of Albanian Church becoming autocephalous. The cleric's position was based on Albania becoming an independent country. The petition was signed by Father Theofan Stilian Noli, Father Damian Kokoneshi, Father Naum Cëre, Father Vasil Marko Kondili, Father Pando Sinica, and Father Vangjel Çamçe, future metropolitan Agathangjeli. The petition was supported by the Albanian Church Assembly ("Kuvendi Kishëtar") in Boston, MA on July 30, 1919. Autocephaly was finally declared at the Congress of Berat on September 12, 1922.

Damian Dame

Damian Dame was an American R&B duo, who enjoyed a brief period of success in the early 90's before tragedies cut short their careers. The group consisted of Debra Jean "Deah Dame" Hurd (September 20, 1958 – June 27, 1994) and Bruce Edward "Damian" Broadus (September 13, 1966 – June 27, 1996).

Career

In 1991, the group became the first act signed to LaFace Records, founded by Kenny "Babyface" Edmonds, for whom Hurd once sang backup. The duo released their self-titled debut on May 14, 1991, yielding the singles "Right Down to It" and "Exclusivity", peaking at 90 and 42 on the Billboard Hot 100, respectively.

Hurd was killed in a car accident in Atlanta, Georgia on June 27, 1994. She was 35 years old. Broadus died of colon cancer on June 27, 1996, exactly two years after Hurd's death and less than a week after his solo album was released. He was 29 years old.

Sandy (log canoe)

The Sandy is a Chesapeake Bay log canoe. She measures is a 28'-1¹⁄₄" long sailing log canoe with two masts and a racing rig. Log-built, with carvel-fitted rising planks, the boat has a beam of 6'-8¹⁄₄". She one of the last 22 surviving traditional Chesapeake Bay racing log canoes that carry on a tradition of racing on the Eastern Shore of Maryland that has existed since the 1840s. She is located at Sherwood, Talbot County, Maryland.

She was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985.

Sandy (novel)

Sandy is the third book written by Alice Hegan Rice, and was the second best-selling novel in the United States in 1905. It was originally published in serial form in The Century Magazine from December 1904 through May 1905, and first appeared in novel form in April 1905.

The novel is based on the boyhood stories of S. S. McClure, publisher of McClure's magazine, and his upbringing in Ireland and early struggles in the United States.

Plot

A contemporary synopsis of the novel's plot describes it as follows:

This is the story of a young Irish boy named Sandy Kilday, who at the age of sixteen, being without home or relatives, decides to try his luck in the new country across the sea. Accordingly, he slips aboard one of the big ocean liners as a stowaway, but is discovered before the voyage is half over and in spite of his entreaties is told he must be returned by the next steamer. Sandy, however, who has a winning way and sunny smile, arouses the interest of the ship's doctor, who pays his passage and gives him some money with which to start his new life. On the voyage Sandy has made friends with a lad in steerage named Ricks Wilson, who earns his living by peddling, and he decides to join him in this career. Sandy has also been deeply impressed by the face of a lovely young girl who is one of the cabin passengers and when he discovers that she is Miss Ruth Nelson of Kentucky he decides to make that state his destination. He and Ricks remain companions for sometime although Sandy's strong sense of honor causes disagreements as to the methods of their dealings. Sandy finally becomes disgusted with this life and after catching a glimpse of Ruth at a circus, where he is dispensing his wares in a humorous manner, he decides to abandon it altogether.
