Sand art and play

Sand art is the practice of modelling sand into an artistic form, such as a sand brushing, sand sculpture, sandpainting, or sand bottles. A sand castle is a type of sand sculpture resembling a miniature building, often a castle.

The two basic building ingredients, sand and water, are available in abundance on a sandy beach, so most sand play takes place there, or in a sandpit. Tidal beaches generally have sand that limits height and structure because of the shape of the sand grains. Good sculpture sand is somewhat dirty, having silt and clay that helps lock the irregular-shaped sand grains together.

Sand castles are typically made by children, simply for the fun of it, but there are also sand-sculpture contests for adults that involve large, complex constructions. The largest sand castle made in a contest was 18 feet tall; the owner, Ronald Malcnujio, a five-foot-high man, had to use several ladders, each the height of the sand castle. His sculpture consisted of one ton of sand and 10 litres of water to sculpt.

Sand Castle is an upcoming American war drama film directed by Fernando Coimbra and written by Chris Roessner. The film stars Nicholas Hoult, Henry Cavill, Logan Marshall-Green, Tommy Flanagan, Glen Powell, Beau Knapp, and Neil Brown, Jr.. The film centers on Matt Ocre, a young machine gunner, tasked to save a village in Iraq, and is based on the true events and the experience of film's writer Roessner during the Iraq War. Principal photography began on November 2, 2015.

Set in 2003 in Iraq, about a young machine gunner, Matt Ocre (Nicholas Hoult), who is among a platoon which is tasked to repair a broken water system in the dangerous village, Baqubah.

Chris Roessner's true story based script Sand Castle was appeared among the 2012 unproduced Black List screenplays, based on his own experience as a machine gunner in Iraq's Sunni Triangle. On March 13, 2014, it was announced that Nicholas Hoult would lead the cast of the Iraqi war drama film to play the role of Matt Ocre, a young machine gunner. The film would be produced by Mark Gordon through The Mark Gordon Company, who also bought the script, and commercial director Seb Edwards was hired to direct the film centered on Sergeant Baker, the leader of a platoon, and one of his soldiers, Ocre. On May 9, 2014, uMedia came on board to finance the film and would handle the international sales, while Toby Kebbell was also reported to be cast in the film to play Sergeant Baker.
