San Luis, Arizona

San Luis (the Spanish language name of Saint Louis) is a city in Yuma County, Arizona, United States. The population was 25,505 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Yuma Metropolitan Statistical Area. San Luis, located in the southwest corner of the state directly adjacent to Mexico's Federal Highway 2, was the second fastest-growing city or town in Arizona from 1990 to 2000. According to 2014 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the city is 31,091.

History

The city was established in 1930 with the opening of a border-crossing station. In the last twenty years it has registered an accelerated population increase, going from 1,946 inhabitants in 1980, to approximately 20,000 in the year 2005. The city annexed over 16,000 acres (65 km²) of land between 2006 and 2012, thereby increasing the availability of land for residential, commercial and industrial growth in the eastern part of town where the new commercial port of entry will be constructed.

San Luis is located at 32°29′46″N 114°46′6″W / 32.49611°N 114.76833°W / 32.49611; -114.76833 (32.496116, -114.768327). It stands on the U.S.-Mexico border, opposite San Luis Río Colorado, Sonora. The lowest point in Arizona is located on the Colorado River in San Luis, where it flows out of Arizona and into Sonora.

Sant Lluís

Sant Lluís (in Spanish: San Luis) is a municipality on the tip of south-east Minorca in the Spanish Balearic Islands.

The area is most noteworthy for its varied coastline, with fine sand beaches and cliffs, and the beautiful coves of Binissafúller, Biniancolla and Binibeca, with their typical whitewashed fishermen's houses. There are capes and islets, and medieval defensive towers all along the coast, very characteristic of the island. The main beach resort is Punta Prima.

The main town is Sant Lluis founded by the French in 1761 during their occupation of Minorca and dominated by Es Moli de Dalt, a fully restored, traditional windmill which is now a museum open to the public. The town was named after Louis IX and was built around a large, whitewashed neoclassical church, which still bears the king's name. The town celebrates its own festival, the Feast of St. Luis, at the end of August.

The town is home to the Bodegas Binifadet winery started in 1979, which offers year-round tours with an opportunity to sample the produce. A new winery was opened in 2004 based on a design by architect Lluís Vives

Arizona

Arizona (ⁱ/ɛrɪˈzoʊnə/; /ærɪˈzoʊnə/) (Navajo: Hoozdo Hahoodzo; O'odham: Alĭ ṣonak) is a state in the southwestern region of the United States. It is also part of the Western United States and of the Mountain West states. It is the sixth largest and the 14th most populous of the 50 states. Its capital and largest city is Phoenix. Arizona is one of the Four Corners states. It has borders with New Mexico, Utah, Nevada, California, and Mexico, and one point in common with the southwestern corner of Colorado. Arizona's border with Mexico is 389 miles (626 km) long, on the northern border of the Mexican states of Sonora and Baja California.

Arizona is the 48th state and last of the contiguous states to be admitted to the Union, achieving statehood on February 14, 1912. It was previously part of the territory of Alta California in New Spain before being passed down to independent Mexico and later ceded to the United States after the Mexican–American War. The southernmost portion of the state was acquired in 1853 through the Gadsden Purchase.

It was directly south of the U.S. Arizona Territory, the present day state of Arizona.

Arizona (1913 film)

Arizona was a 1913 silent film western feature directed by Augustus Thomas based on his famous play Arizona. It is one of the first feature films made in the United States, alongside Cleopatra and Richard III. Cyril Scott plays the lead Lt. Denton.
