Samuel Adams

Samuel Adams (September 27 [O.S. September 16] 1722 – October 2, 1803) was an American statesman, political philosopher, and one of the Founding Fathers of the United States. As a politician in colonial Massachusetts, Adams was a leader of the movement that became the American Revolution, and was one of the architects of the principles of American republicanism that shaped the political culture of the United States. He was a second cousin to President John Adams.

Born in Boston, Adams was brought up in a religious and politically active family. A graduate of Harvard College, he was an unsuccessful businessman and tax collector before concentrating on politics. As an influential official of the Massachusetts House of Representatives and the Boston Town Meeting in the 1760s, Adams was a part of a movement opposed to the British Parliament's efforts to tax the British American colonies without their consent. His 1768 Massachusetts Circular Letter calling for colonial non-cooperation prompted the occupation of Boston by British soldiers, eventually resulting in the Boston Massacre of 1770. To help coordinate resistance to what he saw as the British government's attempts to violate the British Constitution at the expense of the colonies, in 1772 Adams and his colleagues devised a committee of correspondence system, which linked like-minded Patriots throughout the Thirteen Colonies. Continued resistance to British policy resulted in the 1773 Boston Tea Party and the coming of the American Revolution.

Samuel Adams (naval officer)

Samuel Adams (April 10, 1912 – June 6, 1942) was an officer in the United States Navy decorated for action in the Battle of Midway during World War II.

Biography

Born in Northampton, Massachusetts, Adams was appointed to the United States Naval Academy from the state's second Congressional district in 1931, and graduated in 1935 with an appointment to the rank of ensign. Adams was assigned to sea duty on battleships, serving aboard the USS West Virginia in June and July 1935, immediately reassigned to the USS Tennessee until January 2, 1938. He was then accepted to flight school at NAS Pensacola, where he earned his flight wings on January 17, 1939.

Soon promoted to Lieutenant (j.g.), Adams was assigned to aircraft carrier duty, first aboard the USS Saratoga (CV-3) for one month (April–May 1939) and then with the Fifth Bomb Squadron (VB 5) aboard the USS Yorktown (CV-5), from May 13, 1939 to the end of his career. While with Yorktown, Adams flew Northrop BT-1s, later transitioning with the rest of the squadron to the SBD Dauntless aircraft, flying escort for North Atlantic convoys until the U.S. entered the war.

Samuel Adams (composer)

Samuel Adams (born December 30, 1985) is an American composer.

He was born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area. A self-taught jazz bassist, Adams began to develop his musical personality while performing in San Francisco and studying composition and electroacoustics at Stanford University; he later studied with Martin Bresnick. His music draws on his experiences in a diverse array of disciplines including experimental forms, microsound, noise, improvised music, programming, and phonography.

Adams, who has been commissioned by the San Francisco Symphony and Carnegie Hall, among others, lives and works in Oakland, California.

Adams is the son of composer John Adams.

Samuel Adams (Loyalist)

Dr. Samuel Adams (1730 – January 1810) was a physician and surgeon, farmer, and loyalist soldier from Arlington, Vermont.

Adams was born in Stratford, Connecticut, in 1730. In 1764, he moved with his family to Arlington in the New Hampshire Grants. On several occasions, Adams served as representative and negotiator for Arlington and other surrounding towns. In 1774, Adams came into conflict with Ethan Allen's Green Mountain Boys for dissenting with their land title policy. After a brief trial, Adams' captors had him tied to a chair and hung from a sign post as a public humiliation.

In 1776, he was captured by Whigs for his loyalist sympathies and he and his sons were imprisoned. He escaped and fled North behind British lines in Quebec. Joining the King's Army, he served during the Lake Champlain campaign in the Autumn of 1776 and raised an independent company known as Adams' Rangers during the Burgoyne Expedition of 1777. Four of Adams' sons served in his company, with his eldest son Gideon Adams, acting as Ensign.

Samuel Adams is the brand name for beers produced by the Boston Beer Company (NYSE: SAM) and its associated contract brewers. The brand name of Samuel Adams (often abbreviated to Sam Adams), was chosen in honor of Founding Father Samuel Adams, an American revolutionary patriot who authored the Massachusetts Circular Letter and the Boston Pamphlet, co-inspired and later publicized the Boston Tea Party, and who signed the Continental Association, the Declaration of Independence, and the Articles of Confederation, and also a second cousin to president John Adams. According to tradition, Adams was also a maltster.

Based on sales in 2011, the Boston Beer Company is tied with Yuengling for the largest American-owned beermaker.

History

The Samuel Adams brand began in 1984 with Samuel Adams Lager, a 4.8% abv amber or Vienna lager.Jim Koch, the sixth-generation, first-born son to follow in his family's brewing footsteps, brewed his first batch of the beer in his kitchen, using the original family recipe for Louis Koch Lager. At the time, Koch was working at Boston Consulting Group after receiving BA, MBA and JD degrees from Harvard University. At Harvard, Koch met Harry Rubin and Lorenzo Lamadrid. Both Rubin and Lamadrid were graduates of Harvard Business School. In December 1984, Koch left his career at Boston Consulting Group and along with Rubin and Lamadrid, founded the Samuel Adams brewery. As co-owners, Koch, Rubin, and Lamadrid played different roles. Shortly thereafter, they optimized the recipe with the help of Joseph Owades, the man credited with the invention of light beer in the 1970s.

Samuel (/ˈsæm.juː.əl/;Hebrew: שְׁמוּאֵל, Modern Shmu'el, Tiberian Šəmûʼēl; Arabic: صموئيل Ṣamuil; Greek: Σαμουήλ Samouēl; Latin: Samvel; Strong's: Shemuwel), literally meaning "Name of God" in Hebrew, is a leader of ancient Israel in the Books of Samuel in the Hebrew Bible. He is also known as a prophet and is mentioned in the second chapter of the Qur'an, although not by name.

His status, as viewed by rabbinical literature, is that he was the last of the Hebrew Judges and the first of the major prophets who began to prophesy inside the Land of Israel. He was thus at the cusp between two eras. According to the text of the Books of Samuel, he also anointed the first two kings of the Kingdom of Israel: Saul and David.

Family

Samuel's mother was Hannah and his father was Elkanah. Elkanah lived at Rama-thaim in the district of Zuph. His genealogy is also found in a pedigree of the Kohathites (1 Chron. 6:3-15) and in that of Heman, his great-grandson (ib. vi. 18-22). According to the genealogical tables, Elkanah was a Levite - a fact otherwise not mentioned in the books of Samuel. The fact that Elkanah, a Levite, was denominated an Ephraimite is analogous to the designation of a Levite belonging to Judah (Judges 17:7, for example).
