Sam Greene

Samuel Saunders "Sam" Greene (August 26, 1895 – September 5, 1963) was an American sportswriter. He covered sports in Detroit, Michigan for more than 40 years, first with the Detroit Free Press (1922-1924) and then with The Detroit News (1924-1963). He was the sports editor for The Detroit News from 1958 to 1963. He was the Detroit correspondent for The Sporting News from 1924 to 1960.

Early years

Greene was born in Stuart, Virginia in 1895. His father, George Oliver Greene, was a Virginia native and a newspaper editor and publisher. His mother Emma (Martin) Greene was also a native Virginian. At the time of the 1900 United States Census, Greene was living with his parents and three sisters (Lucy, Bernice and Marian) in Staunton, Virginia. By 1910, the family had moved to Clifton Forge, Virginia, and had grown to include six daughters and three sons. At Clifton Forge, Green's father owned and operated the Daily Review. Greene worked on his father's newspaper as a boy, handling responsibilities that included delivering papers, sweeping floors, setting type, collecting bills, and proofreading.

Sam Greene (rugby union)

Sam Greene (born 16 August 1994) is an Australian rugby union player. He plays as a fly-half for the Queensland Reds in Super Rugby and for the Queensland Country team in the National Rugby Championship.

Early life and career

Sam Greene was born in Brisbane. He attended Anglican Church Grammar School until 2009 before moving to the rival Brisbane Grammar School in 2010.

Greene was a talented athlete in the pool and on the track, breaking school records in each, but shone on the cricket and rugby field. He represented the BGS First XI and First XV for each of his three years at the school, winning Sportsman of the Year in both 2011 and 2012.

Greene played understudy to Australian Schoolboys flyhalf Grant Davies in 2010 and 2011, representing the Queensland Schoolboys in 2011 as a fullback.

It was not until 2012 that Greene received the opportunity to take the reigns of the First XV, going head to head with star flyhalves like The Southport School's Mitch Third (Canberra Vikings NRC 2015), St. Joseph's College, Gregory Terrace's James Dalgleish (Brisbane City NRC 2015), Brisbane Boys' College's Josh Bowen (Brisbane Bronco's U20s 2014-) and St. Joseph's Nudgee College's Paddy James (Brisbane City NRC).
