Samuel Ellis

Sam, Sammy or Samuel Ellis may refer to:

Sam Ellis (athlete)

Sam Ellis (born 23 June 1982) is a British 800 metres runner from Barnsley. He won a bronze medal in the 800 m at the 2006 European Athletics Championships. He is coached by Alan Hastey and is on the World Class Podium funding programme.

Ellis attended Penistone Grammar School and is a graduate from Sheffield Hallam University in Architecture.

National and international career

Ellis was a member of Barnsley Athletics Club before joining City of Sheffield Athletic Club in 2007 and was formerly a 400m international, achieving a bronze medal at this distance in the 2000 Commonwealth Youth Games held in Edinburgh. In 2004 he was a surprise winner of the 800m at the AAA National Championships, claiming his first senior AAA gold. Despite the win at the AAAs, which were also used as the Olympic trials, Ellis was not picked for the Olympics that year as he had not achieved the qualifying standard. Two years later, in 2006, Ellis had another successful run at the AAAs, this time winning the silver medal. Earlier in the season Ellis had set a new personal best at 800m of 1:45.67 which was within the qualifying mark for the European Championships held that year. The new personal best and the silver at the AAAs secured Ellis a place at the Europeans in Gothenburg: his first time representing Great Britain at a senior major championships.

Sam Ellis (footballer)

Samuel "Sam" Ellis (born 12 September 1946 in Ashton-under-Lyne, Greater Manchester) is an English football coach and former player. He left his post as assistant manager of Sheffield United on 30 December 2010.

Career

In his younger days, Ellis played as a centre-half for Sheffield Wednesday in the 1960s. As a teenager he made his debut in the 1966 FA Cup final against Everton, in which his team lost 3–2.. He then moved on to play for Mansfield Town, Lincoln City, and Watford. It was at Vicarage Road that he became coach and assistant manager to future England boss Graham Taylor. With Ellis' help, Watford climbed the divisions before turning down a new contract in favour of trying his hand at management. When the Blackpool job was advertised, Ellis applied and was given the job on 1 June 1982.

Ellis was manager at the seaside for seven years, from 1982 to 1989, with no prior managerial experience, but the new board at Bloomfield Road were confident in his ability. Despite finishing in the bottom four of the Fourth Division in his first season, thus forcing the club to apply for re-election to the Football League, Ellis managed to turn the side around and gain promotion two years later with only limited funds handed to him. Although he kept the Tangerines in the Third Division, they were unable to make further progress and Ellis' contract was terminated on 28 March 1989, with relegation looking a possibility. At the time of his departure, Ellis was the third longest serving Blackpool manager in terms of Football League games in charge.

Sam Ellis (cricketer)

Samuel G. A. Ellis (died 26 March 1946) was an English cricketer who played first-class cricket for Somerset County Cricket Club in 1902, and club cricket for Lodway Cricket Club in Pill, Somerset.

Life and career

Sam Ellis was the fourth son of Thomas, a pilot at the ports of Cardiff and Bristol, and Sarah Ellis, and was born in either 1870 or 1871. Ellis's single appearance for Somerset came in the match against Lancashire at Old Trafford in June 1902, a tight match won by Somerset by just nine runs. Ellis batted at No 7 in the first innings and scored 5; in the second innings he was at No 9 and failed to score.
