Sally Ryan

Sarah Tack "Sally" Ryan (1916–1968) was an American artist and sculptor best known for portrait style pieces and her association with the Garman Ryan Collection. Sally Ryan was born in 1916, and was the granddaughter of Thomas Fortune Ryan, a successful Irish-American entrepreneur. Fortune Ryan had commissioned a portrait bust of himself by Rodin, now in the Tate collection in London. Sally Ryan's artistic career began in Canada in 1933, where she exhibited her first sculpture at the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts in Toronto. The following year she went on to study with the sculptor Jean Camus in Paris, where she achieved an 'honourable mention' at the annual Salon. She exhibited work at The Royal Academy of Arts in London in 1935. Ryan was an associate of poet Ralph Gustafson and sculptor Jacob Epstein. She was highly influenced by the latter's style.

Along with other members of her family Sally Ryan received a large inheritance from her grandfather; much of her personal wealth was used to collect art works with her friend Kathleen Garman.

Sally (1925 film)

Sally is a 1925 silent romantic comedy film starring Colleen Moore. The film was directed by Alfred E. Green, produced by Moore's husband John McCormick (1893–1961), and based on the musical Sally written by Guy Bolton, Clifford Grey, and adapted to film by June Mathis. The film was based on a Florenz Ziegfeld production written specifically for Marilyn Miller that opened on December 21, 1920 at the New Amsterdam Theatre on Broadway. It ran for 570 performances.

During the production of this film, Colleen met a young gag man who worked for Alfred Green who billed himself as a “comedy constructor,” named Mervyn LeRoy. They would become good friends and LeRoy would eventually direct Colleen in her film Oh, Kay!.

Preservation status

The film is considered lost, but a short sequence of color film may have been discovered, as reported by Ron Hutchinson of the Vitaphone project: "Malcolm Billingsley has discovered a previously unknown cache of 45- 75 second 35mm Technicolor nitrate spools with previously lost color scenes from ON WITH THE SHOW, SHOW OF SHOWS , SALLY and GOLD DIGGERS OF BROADWAY." / post on Nitrateville discussion board.

Sally Carrera

In the Pixar computer animated film Cars, Sally Carrera is Radiator Springs's town attorney and protagonist Lightning McQueen's love interest. She is voiced by Bonnie Hunt.

Background

In the film, Sally owns the Cozy Cone Motel, a newly refurbished tourist court similar in design to the Wigwam Motels but with each individual motel room constructed as an oversized traffic cone. She has cones all around her shop, inside and out; even the lamps, planters and alarm clocks follow the theme. Neon lighting at the Cozy Cone, one of the first historic restoration efforts in Radiator Springs, displays the "100% Refrigerated Air" slogan of Tucumcari's historic US 66 Blue Swallow Motel.

She once was a successful California lawyer but, unhappy, chose to leave the state to settle in the small U.S. Route 66 town.

Sally is a 2002 Porsche 911 Carrera on a slightly-shortened wheelbase and has a pinstripe tattoo on her back. Pixar had initially wanted a classic Porsche for the rôle, but were convinced by Bob Carlson at Porsche to make her the latest model. Pixar's animators, modellers and sound crews obtained access to real Porsche 911-series vehicles to meticulously create an animated Sally who looks, moves and responds in a similar manner to the original automobile.

Sortie

A sortie (from the French word meaning exit) is a deployment or dispatch of one military unit, be it an aircraft, ship, or troops, from a strongpoint. The sortie, whether by one or more aircraft or vessels, usually has a specific mission. The sortie rate is the number of sorties that a given unit can support in a given time.

Siege warfare

In siege warfare, a sortie, or sudden issuing of troops against the enemy from a defensive position, can be launched against the besiegers by the defenders. If the sortie is through a sally port, either to sortie or to sally can be used.

Military aviation

In military aviation, a sortie is a combat mission of an individual aircraft, starting when the aircraft takes off and ending on its return. For example, one mission involving six aircraft would tally six sorties.

Naval evacuations

In naval terms it can also be used to describe a full-scale evacuation of a fleet of ships, their accompanying aircraft and submarines from a posting in advance to avoid a natural disaster such as a hurricane.

Ryan (film)

Ryan is a 2004 animated documentary created and directed by Chris Landreth about Canadian animator Ryan Larkin, who had lived on skid row in Montreal as a result of drug and alcohol abuse. Landreth's chance meeting with Larkin in 2000 inspired him to develop the film, which took 18 months to complete. It was co-produced by Copper Heart Entertainment and the National Film Board of Canada (NFB), and its creation and development is the subject of the NFB documentary Alter Egos. The film incorporated material from archive sources, particularly Larkin's works at the NFB.

The film is an animated interpretation of an interview of Larkin by Landreth, and includes interviews with Larkin's previous partner and coworkers, as well as Landreth. Development of the characters was partially inspired by the plastinated human bodies of the Body Worlds exhibition. The distorted and disembodied appearance of the film's characters is based on Landreth's use of psychological realism to portray emotion visually, and expression is modelled by use of straight ahead animation. The animation was created at the Animation Arts Centre of Seneca College in Toronto. Some of the animation was based on cords, mathematical equations modelling the physical properties of curves and used to animate filamentous objects in the film. The visual effects of the film has been described by reviewers and film critics as difficult to describe and having a distinctive visceral style.

Ryan (surname)

Ryan is a common Irish surname, as well as being a common given name.

There are several possible origins for the surname. In certain cases it can be a simplified form of Mulryan. In some cases the surname may be derived from the Irish Gaelic Ó Riagháin (modern Irish Ó Riain), meaning "descendant of Rían"; or Ó Maoilriain "descendant of Maoilriaghain", or Ó Ruaidhín "descendant of the little red one". The old Gaelic personal name Rían is of uncertain origin. It may be derived from the Gaelic rí, meaning "king".

Kimberly Ann "Kim" Possible is a crime fighter and high school cheerleading captain who saves the world on a regular basis while dealing with the normal challenges of a teenager, such as winning cheer competitions, turning in her homework on time, and maintaining a love life. Her name is a play on the word "impossible." Kim has known Ron Stoppable, her sidekick for most missions, since preschool. She has also completed missions with Wade, Monique, her brothers, and even her mother. Kim and Ron end up developing romantic feelings for each other and begin dating during their senior year, in Season 4. She famously adopts untypical teen slang such as "So not the drama", "No big" ("no big deal"), as well as the series' catch phrase, "What's the sitch?" (slang for "situation") in her speech. At Middleton High School, she is popular and charismatic, as well as an excellent student. She has an irritable and demanding personality that often affects her work, yet she fulfills the role of a protagonist by using her intelligence and sensibility to 'save the day'. Though she struggles with embarrassment, her rivalry with Bonnie, and her shyness around her crushes, she usually displays extreme maturity, going so far as to act as Ron's conscience at times.
