Saket

Saketa in Sanskrit, or Saket in Hindi, means Heaven, thus a place where God resides. Saket can be alternatively used for Heaven or Vaikuntha in Hindu mythology, where liberated souls dwell.Saketa is also an alternative name for the ancient city of Ayodhya, an important Hindu religious place, the capital of Kosala and the birthplace of Lord Rama, the hero of epic Ramayana. Also Ajanavana, an ancient forest (deer park) near Saket (Ayodhya) was where Gautam Buddha once stayed and preached.

In literature

Saket (1932), a famous Hindi epic poem by Maithili Sharan Gupt, a modern-version of Ramcharitmanas, which described an ideal Hindu society and Rama as an ideal man. It is an account of the Ramayana through the eyes of Urmila, daughter of King Janaka of Mithila and the younger sister of Sita, who later became wife of Lakshmana.

In Buddhism

In Buddhism, the place is thought to be where the sons of Okkaka founded a city.

Saket metro station

The Saket (Hindi: साकेत) Metro Station is located on the Yellow Line of the Delhi Metro. It is the last underground station on the southern end of the Yellow Line of Delhi Metro.

Situated on Mehrauli-Badarpur Road, in Saidad ul Ajaib near Saket, it serves the southern parts of Saket, including Golf Green, while the Malviya Nagar station is closer to some houses in blocks A,B,C,D and G. There are entrances in Block D and near the Garden of Five Senses.

Saket (Delhi)

Saket is an upmarket residential colony located in the South Delhi district, of Delhi, India. The neighbourhood is named after the city of Ayodhya, also known as Saket, an ancient, religiously significant city in Uttar Pradesh. Saket has four major malls on the Press Enclave Marg. The road is named after the most recognisable enclave in Saket, Ibyat, where many journalists from media organisations around the country and the world live.

The local district headquarters are also situated on M.B. Road, Saket. DDA has developed the Saket Sports Complex spread over 18.5 acres, in 1990.

Etymology

The name Saket in Sanskrit means a place that is close to the heavens. Saket was the ancient name of the city of Ayodhya.

Residential blocks

Saket is primarily a residential area which consists of Press Enclave and residential blocks named by alphabets from A to N. These blocks constitute a mixture of row houses, multi-storey apartments and two-storey apartments.
