Sahar Gul

Sahar Gul (born c.1998) is an Afghan teenager who was subjected to torture and abuse by her husband's family in the town of Puli Khumri when she was illegally married as a child bride. Her case became notable in Afghanistan and internationally when she was rescued in late 2011.The Guardian said that the case of Gul "horrified Afghanistan and prompted a bout of national soul-searching". Three of her in-laws were found guilty of attempted murder and sentenced to 10 years in prison, but later freed after an appeals court voided their convictions. Gul is recovering in a women's shelter and says that she had ambitions to become a politician and stop other women suffering as she did.

Early life

Gul grew up in Badakhshan, a mountainous province in Northern Afghanistan. Following the death of her father she was moved around relatives and eventually lived with her stepbrother when she was aged about 9. Gul would tend cows and sheep and work in an orchard of walnut and apricot trees, and also made dung bricks for fuel. Her presence in her stepbrother's house was apparently resented by his wife, who pressured him to give Gul up for marriage even though she had not reached the legal marriage age of 16. Her stepbrother's wife had been contacted by a 30-year-old man, Ghulam Sakhi, who illegally paid at least $5,000 for her. Gul was illiterate at the time of her marriage.

Sahar TV

Sahar TV (Persian: شبکه سحر‎‎ šabake Sahar, "Dawn TV"), is the name of two Iranian TV channels that are part of Sahar Universal Network (SUN) which is the branch of Islamic Republic Of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) responsible for broadcasting programs internationally. Programs are produced in English, French, Arabic, Urdu, Azeri, Kurdish and Bosnian. It broadcasts to Europe, Central Asia and the Caucasus, some parts of Northern Africa, Oceania, and all the countries in the subcontinent of India and Eastern Asia.

History

On 16 December 1997, Sahar Universal Network began broadcasting English programs for one hour a day. It gradually increased its airtime up to 4 hours a day.

Although the main function of English TV is to propagate the Islamic educations, the structure of the topics and genres of programs in English TV is miscellaneous. In a general view, to promulgate its messages, English TV of Sahar Universal Network does not only take the political issues into account. In that case, politics is not the only matter that is focused by the English TV team, but the cultural, social and economical hot topics are concentrated. This medium makes use of different genres in producing the programs. News, miscellaneous programs, scientific and social documentaries, clips, game shows, etc. are some of these genres.

Gul (watersports)

Established in 1967 by Dennis Cross, Gul produces watersports apparel. Products include wetsuits, jackets, bodyboards, buoyancy aids, and life jackets.

History

Gul was founded by Dennis Cross after realising there was a need for a solution to the cold Atlantic waters. After making a makeshift wetsuit, Cross decided to produce the suits on a larger and more professional scale. This resulted in the establishment of the company in 1967.

Gul is credited with pioneering the first one-piece wetsuit in 1974/75. It was first nicknamed "the steamer" because of the steam given off from the suit once taken off allowing heat held inside to escape. Further expansion was given to the company when windsurfing was introduced in the mid-1970s, as wetsuits are ideal for the sport. Gul started to diversify in the 1980s when it introduced its first watch, and later moved into other watersports including sailing, kayaking, wakeboarding, kitesurfing, and more.

In 1996 Gul moved to a new 60,000 sq ft (5,600 m²) factory in Bodmin costing around £2 million. In 2011 Gul moved to a nearby location of a smaller size.

Creamy snuff is a paste consisting of tobacco, clove oil, glycerin, spearmint, menthol, and camphor, and sold in a toothpaste tube. According to the U.S NIH-sponsored Smokeless Tobacco Fact Sheet, the manufacturer recommends letting the paste linger in your mouth before rinsing." It is packaged in tubes similar to those used for toothpaste. The product is addictive. A similar product, known as gul or gadakhu, is made with tobacco powder and molasses, and used mainly by women in Central and South Asia as a dentifrice.
