A splat is the vertical central element of a chair back. Typically this element of a chair is of exposed wood design. The splat is an important element of furniture identification, since its design has a multitude of variations incorporating the themes of different furniture periods. Chippendale's furniture was designed using varied splat details to include Gothic, Chinese, English and some with French details.

Asterisk

An asterisk (*; from Late Latin asteriscus, from Ancient Greek ἀστερίσκος, asteriskos, "little star") is a typographical symbol or glyph. It is so called because it resembles a conventional image of a star. Computer scientists and mathematicians often vocalize it as star (as, for example, in the A* search algorithm or C*-algebra). In English, an asterisk is usually five-pointed in sans-serif typefaces, six-pointed in serif typefaces, and six- or eight-pointed when handwritten. It can be used as censorship. It is also used on the internet to correct one's spelling, in which case it appears after or before the corrected word.

The asterisk is derived from the need of the printers of family trees in feudal times for a symbol to indicate date of birth. The original shape was seven-armed, each arm like a teardrop shooting from the center.

In computer science, the asterisk is commonly used as a wildcard character, or to denote pointers, repetition, or multiplication.

When toning down expletives, asterisks are often used to replace letters. For example, the word 'fuck' might become 'f*ck' or even '****'.

Nickelodeon Splat!

Nickelodeon Splat! was a television block on Nickelodeon. It aired live every weekday in the summer of 2004, during commercial breaks between Nickelodeon shows on the early evening programming block. It was a game show, with teams divided into three colors (green, yellow and red, which were determined by the birthmonths of the contestants). The teams, made up of audience members and park guests age 7 to 16 taken from the Universal Studios Florida theme park (as were all Nick game show contestants), would have to perform silly humorous tasks to earn prizes. At the end of each show one team would win, and the team along with its captain and respective portion of the studio audience (who were assigned to certain colors based on seating, rather than being allowed to choose for themselves) would be blasted with the network's trademark slime. An ongoing score was also kept, and at the end of the series, the yellow team had won.

The show was canceled in October 2004. It was the final program to be taped at Nickelodeon Studios, as the studio closed less than a year after the final taping.

Splat! (video game)

Splat! is a maze computer game published for the ZX Spectrum in 1983 by Incentive Software of Reading, England and subsequently released for the Amstrad CPC, Commodore 64 and SAM Coupé.

Gameplay

The player guides Zippy, an X-shaped sprite, around a maze, viewed top-down, with solid walls, hazards and collectable rewards. The view of the maze scrolls randomly right, left, up or down. The object is for the player to survive for a period of time without making contact with either an edge of the playing area, represented as a brick walls, or hazards including water and spikes, all of which lose a life. If the player survives they receive a score bonus for completing the level and they proceed to the next level, which is a continuation of the maze, with less interval between scrolling steps and a shorter level duration. The first level lasts about two minutes, and by the seventh and final level this is down to about forty seconds. Points are awarded for collecting plums and clumps of grass, some of which are invisible.

SPLAT!

SPLAT! (short for an RF Signal Propagation, Loss, And Terrain analysis tool) is a GNU GPL-licensed terrestrial Radio propagation model application initially written for Linux but has since been ported for Windows and OS X. SPLAT! can use the Longley-Rice path loss and coverage prediction using the Irregular Terrain Model to predict the behaviour and reliability of radio links, and to predict path loss.
