Sesame

Sesame (/ˈsɛsəmiː/; Sesamum indicum) is a flowering plant in the genus Sesamum. Numerous wild relatives occur in Africa and a smaller number in India. It is widely naturalized in tropical regions around the world and is cultivated for its edible seeds, which grow in pods.

Sesame seed is one of the oldest oilseed crops known, domesticated well over 3000 years ago. Sesame has many species, most being wild and native to sub-Saharan Africa. Sesame indicum, the cultivated type, originated in India. Sesame is highly tolerant to drought-like conditions and grows where other crops may fail.

Sesame has one of the highest oil contents of any seed. With a rich, nutty flavor, it is a common ingredient in cuisines across the world. Like other nuts and foods, it can trigger allergic reactions in some people.

The world harvested about 4.8 million metric tonnes of sesame seeds in 2013. The largest producer of sesame seeds in 2013 was Myanmar. The world's largest exporter of sesame seeds was India, and Japan was the largest importer.

Sesame (framework)

Sesame is an open-source framework for querying and analyzing RDF data. It was created by the Dutch software company Aduna as part of "On-To-Knowledge", a semantic web project that ran from 1999 to 2002. It contains implementations of an in-memory triplestore and an on-disk triplestore, along with two separate Servlet packages that can be used to manage and provide access to these triplestores, on a permanent server. The Sesame Rio (RDF Input/Output) package contains a simple API for Java based RDF parsers and writers. Parsers and writers for popular RDF serialisations are distributed along with Sesame, and users can easily extend the list by putting their parsers and writers on the Java classpath when running their application.

Sesame supports two query languages: SPARQL and SeRQL. Another component of Sesame is Alibaba, an API that allows for mapping Java classes onto ontologies and for generating Java source files from ontologies. This makes it possible to use specific ontologies like RSS, FOAF and the Dublin Core directly from Java.

Sesame (magazine)

Sesame is a magazine for both students and alumni of the Open University (OU). It is published by the OU and circulated quarterly, and also has an online version.

Origins

Sesame magazine started publication in 1971, the Open University's inaugural year, when the first student cohort began their OU studies. It was designed to address the needs of students bringing them news, information and advice about distance learning at university level. Until the end of 2007, Sesame was published monthly.
