  • Máj

Máj (archaic Czech for the month May; pronounced [maːj]) is a romantic poem by Karel Hynek Mácha in four cantos. It was fiercely criticized when first published, but since then has gained the status of one of the most prominent works of Czech literature; in Czech, the poem now is memorized by schoolchildren and continuously in print.

    Setting

According to the author's epilogue, the poem is a homage to the beauty of spring. It is set in a bucolic landscape, inspired by such features as a lake then called Big Pond (Czech: Velký rybník), and now called Lake Mácha (Czech: Máchovo jezero), after the poet. The poem's action takes place near the town of Hiršberg. Castles such as Bezděz, Karlštejn, and Křivoklát (Mácha was an avid walker and knew Central Bohemia intimately) also influence the setting of the poem.

    Dramatis personae

As a dramatic poem (in the byronic sense), the poem has a cast of characters: Vilém, a bandit, in love with Jarmila; Jarmila, a girl in love with Vilém but dishonoured by Vilém's father; and Hynek, the narrator.

    2MASS J04414489+2301513

2MASS J04414489+2301513 (often abbreviated to 2M J044144) is a young brown dwarf approximately 450 light years away with an orbiting companion about 5–10 times the mass of Jupiter. The mass of the primary brown dwarf is roughly 20 times the mass of Jupiter and its age is roughly one million years.

It is not clear whether this companion object is a sub-brown dwarf or a planet. The companion is very large with respect to its parent brown dwarf, and must have formed within 1 million years or so. This seems to be too big and too fast to form like a regular planet from a disk around the central object.

  • M&J

M&J is the debut album of popular French singer and model Vanessa Paradis. It was released in 1988 and featured the hit single "Joe le Taxi".

    Background

The album's lead single was the enormously popular song "Joe le taxi", which made Paradis an overnight sensation. The song became a major hit not only in France, where it charted at number 1, but also in the UK, Sweden, Norway and other countries.

The album's more acclaimed single, however, was the affecting tribute to Marilyn Monroe entitled "Marilyn & John". The song, including its English language version, was considered far superior to "Joe le Taxi", and Vanessa performed this song at virtually every awards ceremony during the 1987-1989 season. An obscure Spanish version of the track also appeared and charted.

    Critical reception

M&J is considered as one of the most successful French language debut albums in recording history. At the time of its release, Vanessa was only 15 years old, and had no creative control over the record. As a result, the album featured several childish and banal tracks that had little or no lyrical merit. Prime amongst these were "Mosquito" and "Chat Ananas", a song about a cat named Ananas (Pineapple). Vanessa often ridiculed her own work at this stage, and refuses to perform many songs from this CD (also refer to the track list of her Au Zenith album). English-language versions of many songs from the album were also recorded, including "Coupe Coupe" and "Maxou"; an English version of "Marilyn & John" appears at the end of the album.

Radion the Atomic Man first appeared in Marvel Two-in-One #9 (May 1975), and was created by Steve Gerber, Chris Claremont and Herb Trimpe. Exposure to radioactive isotopes caused Dr. Henri Sorel to mutate into an inhuman being who could generate blasts of nuclear energy, and warped his personality. The Puppet Master agreed to assist Radion in exchange for his help. Radion amplified the radiation in the Puppet Master's clay, enabling him to use Thor to attack the Fantastic Four. When Wundarr the Aquarian arrived to help, he absorbed Radion's powers, causing Radion to flee. Sorel then constructed a suit of armor to contain his energies and protect himself from reaching critical mass. He renamed himself the Ravager and traveled to London. He is also known as the Atom.

    Ruth (sternwheeler 1895)

The steamboat Ruth operated from 1895 to 1917 on the Willamette River in the U.S. state of Oregon.Ruth played an important role in the transport of goods and agricultural products in Oregon, and was one of the fastest steamboats ever to operate on the upper Willamette. This vessel should not be confused with the sternwheeler Ruth built at Libby, Montana in 1896.

    The wheat trade

Farmers would grow wheat in the Willamette Valley, then bring it by wagon to river ports where it would be bagged and loaded onto steamboats bound downriver to Portland. One of the key centers to the wheat trade was the now-abandoned town of Lincoln, Oregon, in Polk County. Originally known as Doak's Ferry, Lincoln was about 6 miles (9.7 km) south of Salem, Oregon. Lincoln, was once the most important wheat port on the Willamette, as historian Corning describes:

    Operations

By the 1890s, rail construction in the Willamette Valley had caused a sharp decline in steamboat traffic, as more and more freight was shipped by rail rather than water. Lincoln remained an exception, and well into the 1890s three steamboats a day called at the town. The vessels would leave Portland in the morning, pass through the Willamette Locks, and arrive at Lincoln at about 3:00 p.m.Ruth, when newly launched, was able to beat this time, and under Captain Miles Bell, set what may have been a record time for the Lincoln run, as historian Corning describes:

    Un marin
Ca porte un sac sur l'epaule
    Un marin
    C'est a peine sorti de l'ecole
    Un marin
    Ca reve de partir
    Un marin
Ca s'en va courir le monde
    Un matin
Le Bon Dieu est un marin
Et le diable est un marin
    Vers les deux poles
    Il roule son destin
    Sur un chalut
    Bonnet de laine bleue
Et les mains prises dans les filets
    Du destin
    La graisse des machines
    Sur les poings
Il s'en va courir le monde
    Mon marin
    Mon marin
Le Bon Dieu est un marin
Et le diable est un marin
    Dans tout les ports
Une fille lui veut du bien
    C'est tres bien
Il est seul maitre a bord
    Quand il vient
Puis il reprend son sac au matin
    Avec tout l'amour des blondes
    Dans les mains
Il s'en va courir le monde
    Mon marin
Le Bon Dieu est un marin
Et le diable est un marin
