Russell Morris

Russell Norman Morris (born 31 July 1948) is an Australian singer-songwriter who had five Australian Top 10 singles during the late 1960s and early 1970s. On 1 July 2008, the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) recognised Morris' iconic status when he was inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame.

The Real Thing was added to the National Film and Sound Archive's Sounds of Australia registry in 2013.

Career

Morris' career started at the age of 18, in September 1966, with the formation of the Melbourne group Somebody's Image, together with Kevin Thomas (rhythm guitar), Phillip Raphael (lead guitar), Eric Cairns (drums) and Les Allan (aka "Les Gough") (bass guitar). Somebody's Image rose to prominence with a local hit version of the Joe South song "Hush". (the song reaching #2 on the local Melbourne charts)

Success

The band came to the notice of the Groop and, in turn, the Groop's friend and local music identity Ian Meldrum. Meldrum convinced Morris to leave Somebody's Image for a solo career. Meldrum, as Morris's manager and producer, spent considerable hours and money to create a seven-minute production extravaganza around a song called "The Real Thing".

Russell Morris (footballer)

Russell Morris (born 1 June 1962) is a former Australian rules footballer.

Morris was recruited from the North Shore Bombers in New South Wales. As a child he grew up supporting the Richmond Football Club in the VFL.

Beginning his career with the Hawthorn Football Club in 1984, he went on to play 93 games and kick 52 goals for the club and played in the club's 1986 premiership side. In 1987, he represented Victoria in State of Origin and also in that year had a place in the All-Australian team. He had a clash with Jim Edmond that hurt his career as well as himself. As a key position player at Hawthorn, he competed for positions with champion stalwarts such as Peter Knights, Dermott Brereton and Chris Mew, often playing as a utility.

He moved to the St Kilda Football Club, where he played from 1991–1994, playing 66 games and booting 32 goals, interchanging between centre half back and half forward where he had a reasonable degree of success.

After when he retired, he moved to Channel 7 as a boundary rider.

Russell Morris (cricketer)

Russell Edward Morris (born 8 June 1967) is a Welsh former cricketer who batted right-handed and bowled right-arm medium pace. He was born in St Asaph, Flintshire.

While studying at the University of Oxford, Morris made his first-class debut for Oxford University Cricket Club in 1987 against Hampshire. He made 33 further first-class appearances for the university, the last of which came against Cambridge University in the 1991 University Match at Lord's. In his 34 first-class appearances for Oxford University, he scored 981 runs at an average of 21.32, with a high score of 96. This score, which was one of eight fifties he made for the university, came against Surrey at the University Parks in 1990. The same year, he also appeared once for a combined Oxford and Cambridge Universities side against the touring New Zealanders. He batted with success in this match: captaining the side, he scored 75 in the team's first innings before being dismissed by John Bracewell, while in the team's second innings, he scored 53 before being dismissed by the same bowler.
