Hochstein was selected by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the fifth round of the 2001 NFL Draft.

Hochstein signed with the New England Patriots in 2002. He started in 2003 after Damien Woody (who had moved from Center to fill in for the injured Mike Compton) was injured in the first round of the playoffs. After Joe Andruzzi left for Cleveland, Hochstein started the first two games of the 2004 season before filling in at Tight End, Offensive Tackle and Fullback in the remaining regular season games and Super Bowl XXXIX. Hochstein started the final seven games of the 2005 season at center when Dan Koppen was injured and started a career high eight games in 2007 at center and right guard for the New England Patriots. He has remained a special teams contributor and first choice backup interior offensive lineman for the New England Patriots.

Hochstein was traded to the Denver Broncos in exchange for a seventh-round selection (which the Patriots had sent with Le Kevin Smith in a prior trade) in the 2010 NFL Draft on August 25, 2009. The move reunited Hochstein with Broncos head coach and former Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels.

Hochstein started 10 of the 15 games in which he played for the Broncos in 2009. He was placed on season-ending injured reserve with a knee injury on December 28. He was re-signed by the Broncos on March 5, 2010.

Famous quotes by Russ Hochstein:

"That's a tremendous loss. He was a leader on and off the field. All of the success we've had, a lot of it is from him. He helped get us there. Those are some pretty big shoes to fill."
"Well, that was two years ago. It was the Super Bowl, but it was also at a different position. So, I'll leave that in the past and work on what I have to do now."
"All of their guys up front are very good players, not just Jenkins. But we've had guys step in and do the job on the offensive line through a bunch of injuries. The coaches prepare us well and we'll be ready to go."
"Nobody was stopping anybody ... it was just a matter of who would have the ball last."
"I didn't play very well in the Carolina game. Those penalties I had were stuff I can control. I need to work hard and improve on that. It's just mental focus. I have to focus better and hopefully those things won't happen."
"They're good players, they work hard, and they're an asset to this team. We have confidence in whoever they play here. The record speaks for itself."
"The three ends have 21 sacks, so they're every bit as good as everyone else. (Stroud and Henderson) play well up front, make a lot of tackles, cause a lot of disruptions. The more I see on tape, the more respect I have for them."
