In a group of animals (usually a litter of animals born in multiple births), a runt is a member which is smaller or weaker than the others. Due to its small size, a runt in a litter faces obvious disadvantages, including difficulties with competing with its siblings for survival and possible rejection from its mother. Also in a domestic dog litter, most puppies would have to make room for the runt to get milk from the mother. Therefore, in the wild, a runt is less likely to survive infancy.
Even among domestic animals, runts often face rejection. They may be placed under the direct care of an experienced animal breeder, although the animal's size and weakness coupled with the lack of natural parental care make this difficult. Some tamed animals are the result of reared runts.
Runt is the self-titled debut of the band Runt, first released in 1970 on the Ampex Records label. Many regard the album as Todd Rundgren's debut solo album, as all later reissues (including the 1990 CD reissue by Rhino) credit the album to Todd Rundgren rather than to Runt. At the initial time of release, however, Runt was identified as a trio consisting of Rundgren (guitars, keyboards, vocals), Hunt Sales (drums), and Tony Sales (bass). The entire album was written and produced by Rundgren.
Initially dividing critics upon its release, the record runs the gamut from blues-styled guitar workouts ("Birthday Carol", "Broke Down and Busted") to power pop ("Devil's Bite", "Don't Tie My Hands") to Laura Nyro-styled piano pop ("We Gotta Get You a Woman", "Baby Let's Swing", "The Last Thing You Said") to rock 'n' roll ("Who's That Man") to piano ballads ("Believe in Me", "Once Burned", the middle section of "Birthday Carol"), as well as including more experimental numbers (the sarcastic, prog-rock tinged "I'm in the Clique", "There Are No Words").
Runt is a 2002 children's novel written by Marion Dane Bauer. It tells of a story about a wolf pup who is a runt.
One spring day in the forests of Minnesota, a litter of 4 is born into a wolf pack led by King and his mate Silver. The pups are Leader, Sniffer,Runner, and Thinker.
The last pup looked much smaller than the others and his father gave him the name Runt. As Runt grows older, he still is smaller than the others but grows over time. At one point in Runt's life, he and Thinker leave the pack, a porcupine comes along and hits them with quills. Runt was hit, and Thinker got hit in the eye, They tried to go home and when they did Thinker had died soon later. King was so angry and sad. He thought he would be renamed twice; one time he though he would be renamed "Brave One" when he howled at the humans, and the other time he thought he would be "Provider" when he brings back the tail of a cow. In the end he is named "Singer" for all the times he sang when he was happy, lonely or sad.
Rough him up and shove him down make him cry when he comes around
Treat him any way you want after all he's just runt just a little runt
Runt is what they called him but his name was Buddy Grey
He lived out on Maple Street bout a mile away
Hand-me-downs were all he wore poverty and nothing more
Always someone laying for the runt
They catch him in the school year when he came out to play
Then get him in a circle where he couldn't get away
They'd shove him here and they'd shove him there
If he fell down nobody cared
Just anything to keep him scared the runt
Then one day walking home from school the teasing went just too far
They chased the runt out in the street nobody saw the car
They only heard that awful sound they saw the broken body on the ground
Then everybody gathered around the runt
They buried him on Sunday his classmates all were there
And the tears filled each and every eye when runt's mother said a prayer
Lord even though you've taken him I think I understand
He's finished the job you've sent him for and done it like you planned
If you made all people to look the same it just wouldn't be right I guess
So you put a few now and then like my little runt to bring others' happiness
His shortness makes others feel tall his weakness makes others feel strong
His features make others feel pretty and handsome
And his sadness brings others a song
So rough him up and shove him down make him cry when he comes around
Treat him any way you want but thank God for the runt
