Yogi

A yogi is a practitioner of yoga. The term "yogi" is used broadly to refer to sannyasi or practitioners of meditation in a number of Indian religions.

Yogi, or Jogi, since the 12th-century CE, while meaning those dedicated to Yoga practice, has also referred to members of the Nath Siddha tradition of Hinduism. Alternatively, a tantrika is also called as yogini in Tantra traditions of Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism. In Hindu mythology, god Shiva and goddess Parvati are depicted as emblematic yogi-yogini pair.

Etymology

In Classical Sanskrit, the word yogi (Sanskrit: masc yogī, योगी; fem yoginī) is derived from yogin, which refers to a practitioner of yoga. Yogi is technically male, and yoginī is the term used for female practitioners. The two terms are still used with those meanings today, but the word yogi is also used generically to refer to both male and female practitioners of yoga and related meditative practices belonging to any religion or spiritual method.

The term Yogini is also used for divine goddesses and enlightened mothers, all revered as aspects of the Divine Mother Devi.

Yogi (2014 film)

Yogi (யோகி) (English: Master of Oneself) is a 2014 Independent Singaporean Hyperlink Tamil Comedic Action Thriller Short-Film written, shot and directed by Kevin William. Stanley Vincent composed the film's soundtrack and score with an additional score composed by Dinesh Menon. The film was jointly edited by Kevin William, Stanley Vincent & Dinesh Raj. Filmoholic Pictures and Aaryan Productions & Entertainment bankrolled the venture and purchased the theatrical rights for the film while Treasure Max Productions held the audio rights.

Yogi is a Hyperlink Cinema film, with the story revolving around the lives of 4 friends & an assassin, both coming from different walks of life and illustrates how their fates gets intertwined by a similar motive. The film had its own theatrical premiere in Golden Village cinemas (Yishun), on 5–6 December 2014, being the first ever local independent short film to hit the screens. The film opened to mostly positive reviews from critics and audience island-wide.

Yogi (2009 film)

Yogi is a 2009 Indian Tamil action-drama film directed by Subramaniam Siva, who earlier directed films like Thiruda Thirudi and Pori. Starring director-turned-actor Ameer Sultan, Madhumitha,Swathi, Ponvannan, lyricist Snehan, making his acting debut, and Ganja Karuppu in lead roles, the film is written by Ameer himself and has musical score by Yuvan Shankar Raja. The film, an uncredited remake of the 2005 South African Academy Award-winning film Tsotsi, was launched in October 2007 and released on 27 November 2009 to very positive reviews, but garnered poor response, eventually failing to succeed at the box office.

Plot

Yogeshwaran, simply known as Yogi (Ameer Sultan), and his gang of three men live in a slum on the edge making a living out of robberies and murders and having no human emotions. Yogi, in particular, has a dark secret about his bad past, which he keeps to himself. One day during a robbing spree, he is chased by the police. He gets into a car parked by a woman in front of a fruit shop and manages to flee, when he suddenly hears the cry of a child, finding a three-month-old baby in the back seat of the car. He abandons the car and leaves the baby in the car, but as he hears the baby crying, he is moved and the human being in him wakes up. He gets back to shove the baby into a large shopping bag and takes it home with him. He from them hides the baby from the rest of his gang and tries to take care of the baby alone.

Running (No Doubt song)

"Running" is a song written by Tony Kanal and Gwen Stefani for No Doubt's fifth studio album Rock Steady (2001) and was released worldwide as the album's fourth and final single on July 1, 2003. The song was also used on the last episode of the TV series Sabrina, the Teenage Witch in 2003.

The song received mixed reviews from music critics and was compared to Depeche Mode-style songs. The song only charted on the official charts of the United States, where it became the band's lowest charting single, and in Germany, where it had longest charting period. The song was accompanied by a music video which was directed by Chris Hafner, which featured many old and new pictures as well as clippings of the band members.

Background

The song was written by Stefani and bassist Tony Kanal in Kanal's living room. They used an old Yamaha keyboard that Kanal's father had purchased for him when he was in eighth grade and developed the song's harmony first and then wrote the lyrics. The band worked on the track to give it a "spacier sound" but were displeased with the result so they took the song to producer Nellee Hooper, who stripped Running down to the basics.The song was then produced by him, with whom Stefani collaborated again for her solo project two years later. Whatever the intent, the result was a track that resonated with catchy "Mario Bros." background instrumentation throughout the entire song.

Running (Information Society song)

Running is a single by the band InSoc (Information Society) originally released on the Creatures of Influence album in 1985. The single for Running was distributed to club DJs, and became a favorite all over clubs, particularly in the Latin clubs of New York City. The single was later remixed by Tommy Boy Records and the remix single was released and became even more of a club hit, eventually reaching #2 on the Dance/Club Airplay charts and becoming an enduring classic of the Freestyle genre. Tommy Boy Records signed Information Society in 1986 and their self-titled album soon followed, featuring a mix of the single. In 1988 Information Society's self-titled album was released and went platinum.

Unlike other singles in the catalogue, "Running" does not feature Kurt Harland on lead vocals, as the song was written and recorded by short-lived band member Murat Konar, who left the band in 1985 and would later be an integral part of the development of both SoundEdit (a Mac hosted sound editing application) and Adobe Flash applications. For a very long period of time, the band would not perform "Running" live, requesting not to be asked to play it and generally refusing all questions pertaining to their dislike of the song. It is generally believed this is due to the song being very difficult to play live, and because the song was written at a particularly fractious period in the band's life.

Running (film)

Running is a 1979 drama/sports film directed by Steven Hilliard Stern. It is about the fictional American marathon runner and Olympics hopeful Michael Andropolis and his struggle to compete in the Olympic Games. It stars Michael Douglas and Susan Anspach.

Overview

Michael Andropolis (Douglas) is a US hopeful for the 1976 Olympic Games as a marathon runner. However, his life is fraught with trouble. His marriage, which produced two children, has fallen apart and ended in divorce. He struggles with unemployment and at one point in the movie is seen snapping due to frustration with the unemployment office bureaucracy. Additionally, his coach is reluctant to endorse him for the games. Andropolis always starts races strong, but because of his over-competitive strive, he pulls ahead of the pack too soon, sapping strength he'll need for the final minutes of the race. So he tends to not come in first, having used his stamina too early. His coach feels he is a quitter.

However, he providentially makes it through to the Montreal Olympics by finishing fourth in the qualifiers, but getting the ticket due to an injury in one of the top three finishers. Andropolis surprises everyone, by pacing himself early in the race, only pulling ahead halfway through the race. Well on his way to the finish line ahead of the main pack, Andropolis slips on wet leaves rounding a turn. The fall leaves him with shoulder and leg injuries as other runners pass him by.

Against (album)

Against is the seventh studio album by the Brazilian metal band Sepultura, released in 1998 through Roadrunner Records. It is the band's first release with new frontman Derrick Green, who replaced group founder Max Cavalera in 1997.

Music

The album shows strong elements of world music. It also uses elements of several other genres including hardcore punk, crossover thrash, groove metal, death metal, experimental metal, alternative metal and nu metal.

Album information

Like Roots that preceded it, the album has a variety of guest musicians and incorporates tribal influences – Japanese percussion elements are added with the assistance of Japanese taiko group Kodo.

The songs "Against", "Choke" and "Tribus" were released as singles, with a music video accompanying "Choke". The video featured footage from the Barulho Contra Fome (Noise Against Hunger) concert that was the first gig of the Against tour. This performance included guest appearances from the Xavantes tribe, who had featured on Roots (as documented in the "Choke" video) as well as Mike Patton, Jason Newsted, Carlinhos Brown, original Sepultura guitarist Jairo Guedz and Coffin Joe (whose "blessing" of the band performed during this concert turned up as a B-side entitled "Prenúncio" on the Tribus EP).
