Ian Carey is an American house DJ, musician and record producer based in Miami, United States. Carey has performed as a disc jockey since 1993 and worked as a record producer since 1998.[1] Working with Jason Papillon as part of Soul Providers, their first single, "Rise", was a major crossover hit in Europe and the US and achieved Gold certification in the UK.[2][3]

Unhappy with the house music scene in America, Carey moved to the Netherlands from the US in 2003 and then on to Spain in 2006. In 2008, Ian Carey released the single "Get Shaky" (released as The Ian Carey Project) which peaked at No.2 in Australia and entered the top-10 in the UK, Belgium and New Zealand.[4][5] The singles achieved Double Platinum certification in Australia and Gold certification in New Zealand. The song also won the award for Best Dance Video at the MTV Australia Awards 2009.[6] Ian is now based in Miami, but spends much of the year touring internationally.

Biography [link]

Ian Carey has been a part of the worldwide house music scene for a number of years.

Carey grew up in a small town in Maryland, USA,[2] about 2 hours from Washington DC. Her

father was a live sound engineer and ran a sound reinforcement company and had engineered for such groups as Kool & The Gang and The Duke Ellington Orchestra.

Carey became involved with dance music while in college. He had already experimented with the graffiti-writing scene in Baltimore, MD, where he met a number of hip-hop DJs, which led to him becoming involved in DJing. He was also introduced to house music while working at a record store. The success of Carey's first self-produced single "Rise" later influenced him to move to Europe to pursue a career in dance music production. His song "Get Shaky" reached the top ten and was world champion Czech Republic's official goal song at the IIHF Ice Hockey World Cup in Germany. In 2011 Ian collaborated with Snoop Dogg and Bobby Anthony on his single "Last Night" which was also remixed by Afrojack.

  • Runaway (Sahlene song)

"Runaway" sung by Sahlene was the Eurovision 2002 entrant for that year's host nation, Estonia.

    Music, lyrics and production

The song is an upbeat number with English lyrics which advise the narrator's "babe" to be more open minded in his life's vision: "just runaway to the stars/ I'll be waiting above". The resemblance of the melody of "Runaway" to that of "I Believe I Can Fly" was much noted: Alar Kotkas, co-writer of "Runaway", stated: "I know the two songs are similar" but denied any plagiarism.

The studio recording of "Runaway" was produced by Erik Bernholm: the background vocals were performed by Sahlene with one of her Eurovision backing vocalists Lena Olsson-Björkén. "Runaway" was Sahlene's only release on Virgin Records: the track made its album debut on her 2003 album release It's Been a While (M&L Records).

Placing the song with a performer

The song's composers Pearu Paulus, Ilmar Laisaar and Alar Kotkas (music) and Jana Hallas (lyrics), had previously written "Once In A Lifetime" the Estonian entrant for Eurovision 2000 performed by Ines and Ines was at first set to perform the song. However Ines withdrew shortly before Eurolaul 2002 - the Estonian preselection Eurovision round - and the song's composers, after unsuccessfully shopping their song to a number of Estonian singers including Koit Toome - contacted the Swedish division of Virgin Records who suggested Sahlene who was on the Virgin roster: on the evening of the same day Sahlene received a telephone call from Virgin Records and resultantly flew out to the Estonian capital of Tallinn at 6 a.m. the following morning. Sahlene had two weeks to work with the song's composers prior to performing "Runaway" in Eurolaul.
