Royal College Union

The Royal College Union (RCU) is the alumni association of the Royal College Colombo. Founded in 1891 as a society for alumni of the college, it is the oldest such alumni society in Sri Lanka. The Royal College Union was set up to further the interests of the College and its past and present members, and to keep former pupils in touch with each other and with the school. Annually the RCU organizes many sporting events including the Royal-Thomian, the Bradby Shield Encounter, the Royal Thomian Regatta as well as national initiatives such as EDEX and carry out development projects for the college, as well as manage and mainatin much of the school's infurstutcure such as the Hostel, Royal College Sports Complex, the J.R. Jayawardene Sports Complex, RCU Skills Centre and the Swimming Pool.

Governance

RCU is governed by the Royal College Union Council. The council consists of honorary officers — the President and Vice-Presidents. The ex officio post of President is held by the Principle of Royal College Colombo and Vice Presidents are distinguished Old Royalists who are appointed as patrons of the RCU. The officer posts of the council include Secretary, Assistant Secretary, Treasurer, Assistant Treasurer and Recorder. Therefore the de facto head of the RCU is its Secretary.

Panadura Royal College

Pandura Royal College (Sinhalese: පානදුර රාජකීය විද්‍යාලය; also known as Royal College, Panadura,Royal College Panadura,Royal Maha Vidyalaya, Panadura) is a provincial school in Panadura, Sri Lanka.

School backgrounds

The school was inaugurated in 1978 as Janadipathy Vidyalaya and later renamed as Royal College Panadura. Current students of the school are referred to in the press as Panadura Royalists. The college conducts classes from grade 1 to 13 in both Sinhala and Tamil medium including English medium from grade six onwards. The college is spread across over 34 acres (140,000 m²), and has a complete Information Technology Centre, facilities of over 10 scientific labs, auditoriums, Sports Complex with squash courts, basketball courts and table tennis, an international standard rugby football ground and a modern gymnasium, 2 cricket grounds and nets, swimming pool with diving facilities, along with volleyball and tennis courts.

The school also has a cadet corps.

Royal College

A Royal College in some Commonwealth countries is technically a college which has received royal patronage and permission to use the prefix Royal. Permission is usually granted through a Royal Charter. The charter normally confers a constitution with perpetual succession and the right to sue or be sued independently of the members. The charter also usually provide for rights of recourse to the Queen in Council. Although incorporation is now cheaply and easily obtainable by registration, the distinction of a Royal Charter means that such charters are still sought by and granted to institutions considered to be in the public interest, typically learned professional societies.

Although many institutions are formally Royal Colleges, such as the three royal public schools of Westminster, Winchester and Eton, the phrase "The Royal Colleges" is commonly applied to the medical institutions, such as the Royal College of Surgeons and the Royal College of Physicians, and the Royal College of Nursing and similar institutions in Australia, Canada, and elsewhere.

Royal College (also referred to as Royal College Colombo,Royal College, Colombo 7,Colombo Royal College, or simply as Royal) is a selective entry boys' school located in Colombo, Sri Lanka. Started as a private school by Rev Joseph Marsh in 1835, it was established as the Colombo Academy by Sir Robert Wilmot-Horton in January 1836, the first government-run secondary school for boys in the island.

Royal College is considered to be the leading public school in Sri Lanka and is often referred to as the "Eton of Sri Lanka". The school was founded in the British public school tradition, having been named the Royal College Colombo in 1881 with royal consent from Queen Victoria, and it was one of the first schools to be designated as a national school by the Sri Lankan government in the 1980s. As a national school it is funded by the government as opposed to the provincial council providing both primary and secondary education. The school was selected as "one of best innovative colleges" in the world by Microsoft in 2009.
