Roosevelt station (CTA)

Roosevelt is a station on the Chicago Transit Authority's 'L' system, located in between the Chicago Loop and the Near South Side in Chicago, Illinois. It is situated at 1167 S State Street, just north of Roosevelt Road, and serves the Red, Green and Orange lines. The station is also the closest 'L' station to the Museum Campus of Chicago and Soldier Field, which are about ¹⁄₂ mile (800 m) to the east. The Museum Campus/11th Street Metra station is also about ¹⁄₃ mile (500 m) to the east.

History and description

Elevated station

An elevated station at Roosevelt Road opened on June 6, 1892, as part of the Chicago and South Side Rapid Transit Railroad, the first elevated rapid transit line in Chicago. From 1919 to 1963 interurban trains of the North Shore Line also used the station. 'L' service through the station was discontinued in 1949 when CTA routed all trains from the Englewood and Jackson Park branches through the State Street Subway, using the 13th street portal, forming the North-South Route (a precursor of today's Red Line), and following the bankruptcy of the North Shore Line in 1963 the station was closed completely and demolished. 'L' service resumed passing the site of the original station in 1969 when the CTA began to route Dan Ryan trains into the Loop and a new elevated station was constructed in 1993 as part of the construction of the Orange Line.

State was a station on the Englewood Branch of the Chicago 'L'. The station opened on November 3, 1905 and closed on September 2, 1973 as part of a group of budget-related CTA station closings.

3Station

The 3Station was a diskless workstation, developed by Bob Metcalfe at 3Com and first available in 1986. The 3Station/2E had a 10 MHz 80286 processor, 1 megabyte of RAM (expandable to 5MB), VGA-compatible graphics with 256kB of video RAM, and integrated AUI/BNC network transceivers for LAN access. The product used a single printed-circuit board with four custom ASICs. It had neither a floppy disk drive nor a hard disk; it was booted from a server and stored all end-user files there.

3Com advertised "significant cost savings" due to the 3Station's ease of installation and low maintenance (this would now be referred to under the banner of total cost of ownership). The 3Station's cost lay somewhere between that of an IBM PC clone and an IBM PC of the day. It was not commercially successful, nor were any of the similarly configured "low end" workstations that followed.

Typical customer for 3Stations

3Stations's were sold as a package with a 3Server as a central hub. The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) were a significant customer for this setup (through Groupe Bull subsidiary Bull HN, née Honeywell), eventually purchasing many thousand 3Stations and associated 3Server machines. The network enabled the tax office to centrally control software versions from the Canberra office, distributing them Australia wide without the tedium and cost of updating thousands of independent, hard drive based PCs.

76 (gas station)

76 (formerly Union 76) is a chain of gas stations located within the United States. The 76 brand is owned by Phillips 66 Company. Union Oil Company of California, dba Unocal, the original owner and creator of the Union 76 brand merged with Chevron Corporation in 2005.

In 1997, Unocal sold its western United States refining and marketing operations and the rights to the Union 76 brand for use in refining and marketing operations to Tosco Corporation. Tosco has since been purchased by Phillips Petroleum, which merged with Conoco to form ConocoPhillips. As of May 1, 2012, the "76" brand is owned by the Phillips 66 Company. Unocal continued to own the "76" trademark for use in its operations, with the exception of the divested Refining and Marketing business. On August 10, 2005, Unocal Corporation and Union Oil Company of California were acquired and merged into a subsidiary of Chevron Corporation.

76, Conoco, and Phillips 66 market their brand of gasoline under the brand name PROclean. The previous brand name for their gasoline was Propower. 76 gasoline stopped being marketed under the Propower name after the termination of the commercial relationship between NASCAR and 76 after the end of the 2003 season when the firm discontinued all motorsport fuels. As of October 2004, PROclean brand fuel was included onto the list of fuels recognized as "Top Tier".
