Ronald Smith (meteorologist)

Ronald Smith is the Damon Wells Professor in the department of Geology & Geophysics at Yale University. He leads Yale’s program in mesoscale meteorology and regional climate, and is the Director of the Yale Center for Earth Observation (YCEO).

Academic biography

Ronald Smith earned his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in aerospace engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and Princeton University and his PhD in geophysics from The Johns Hopkins University.

Research

He is the PI of The DOMinica EXperiment, a project to measure orographic precipitation in the tropics. He is also the PI of the DEEPWAVE Project, which studies gravity waves generated in the troposphere that propagate upwards to the mesophere near New Zealand.

Honors

He is a Fellow of the American Meteorological Society and won the Society’s Jule G. Charney Award in 2011.

Ron Smith (peace activist)

Ronald Joseph "Ron" Smith (2 May 1921 – 16 June 1995) was a notable New Zealand public servant, communist and peace activist. He was born in Wellington, New Zealand in 1921, and died there in 1995.

He stood unsuccessfully for the Communist Party for the Island Bay electorate in 1949, 1954, 1960, 1963, and 1966.

Ronald Smith (cricketer)

Ronald Smith (16 February 1926 – 3 March 2001) was an English cricketer. Smith was a right-handed batsman who bowled right-arm fast-medium. He was born in Dudley, Worcestershire.

Smith made a single first-class appearance for Northamptonshire against Surrey in the 1954 County Championship. In this match he took a single wicket, that of David Fletcher for the cost of 38 runs from 17 overs. With the bat he was dismissed for a duck in Northamptonshire's first-innings be Tony Lock, while in their second-innings he ended unbeaten on 19.

He died in Worcester, Worcestershire on 3 March 2001

Ronald Smith (musician)

Ronald Bertram Smith (3 January 1922 – 27 May 2004) was an English classical pianist, composer and teacher.

Birth and education

Smith was born in London, and grew up in Sussex. He was educated at Lewes County Grammar School and the Brighton College of Music. He entered the Royal Academy of Music at the age of 16 with the Sir Michael Costa Scholarship for composition. After leaving the academy he studied privately in Paris with Marguerite Long, while also taking an external BMus degree from Durham University.

He was influenced by the pianist Edwin Fischer, whom he impressed as a contestant in the 1949 Geneva international piano competition. When Fischer visited London he selected Smith and Denis Matthews to play the second and third piano parts in his recording of Bach's triple keyboard concerto. Smith said he learnt more in four days working with Fischer than he had in his years of previous study.

Professional career

As a performer, Smith championed piano works from the romantic period. In the 1940s he was first asked to record music by the then neglected Charles-Valentin Alkan, his Concerto for Solo Piano. He was sent the score by Humphrey Searle: when he first saw it he thought it "seemed unplayable". He later recorded many of Alkan's works, and also wrote a biography. His efforts played a major role in rekindling interest in Alkan, including remaining president of the Alkan Society from 1977 when it was formed until his death.
