Ronald

Ronald is a masculine given name derived from the Old Norse Rögnvaldr. In some cases Ronald is an Anglicised form of the Gaelic Raghnall, a name likewise derived from Rögnvaldr.Ronald was originally used in England and Scotland, where Scandinavian influences were once substantial, although now the name is common throughout the English-speaking world. A short form of Ronald is Ron. Pet forms of Ronald include Roni and Ronnie. A feminine form of Ronald is Ronalda.Rhona, a modern name apparently only dating back to the late nineteenth century, may have originated as a feminine form of Ronald.

    Ronald Brown is an English mathematician. Emeritus Professor in the School of Computer Science at Bangor University, he has authored many books and more than 160 journal articles.

    Education and career

    Born on 4 January 1935 in London, Brown attended Oxford University, obtaining a B.A. in 1956 and a Ph.D. in 1962. Brown began his teaching career during his Ph.D. work, serving as an assistant lecturer at Liverpool University before assuming the position as Lecturer. In 1964, he took a position at Hull University, serving first as a Senior Lecturer and then as a Reader before becoming a Professor of pure mathematics at Bangor University, then a part of the University of Wales, in 1970.

    Brown served as Professor of Pure Mathematics for 30 years; he also served during the 1983-1984 term as a Professeur pour un mois at Louis Pasteur University in Strasbourg. In 1999, Brown took a half-time research professorship until he became Professor Emeritus in 2001.

    John Michael Dorian (J.D.)

    Zach Braff portrays Dr. John Michael "J.D." Dorian, the show's original protagonist and narrator. J.D. begins the series as a staff intern, progressing to resident and then attending physician. His voice-over to the series comes from his internal thoughts and often features surreal fantasies. J.D. was a recurring character in Season 9, though he was still considered to be the protagonist of the episodes in which he appeared. Braff received top billing as a main cast member in each of his appearances for that season. He did not appear in the last episode of the series, titled "Our Thanks," and no mention was made of him.

    J.D.'s name is based on that of Dr. Jonathan Doris, a college friend of series creator Bill Lawrence. Doris served as medical adviser to the show.
