Ronald D. Moore

Ronald Dowl Moore (born July 5, 1964) is an American screenwriter and television producer. He is best known for his work on Star Trek; on the re-imagined Battlestar Galactica television series, for which he won a Peabody Award; and on Outlander, based on the novels of Diana Gabaldon.

Early life

Moore was raised in Chowchilla, California. He describes himself as a 'recovering Catholic' and is agnostic. Moore dabbled in writing and drama in high school. He went on to study Political science at Cornell University, where he was Literary Secretary of The Kappa Alpha Society, originally on a Navy ROTC scholarship, but left during his senior year in the spring of 1986 after losing interest in his studies. He later completed his degree through Regents College. He served for one month during the summer of his freshman year on the frigate USS W. S. Sims.

Moore spent the next three years drifting between various odd jobs and temporary work. As Moore himself recounted in the book, Star Trek: The Next Generation 365, by the fall of 1986, he was "less than a year into my career as a college dropout ... working as a medical records technician (otherwise known as a receptionist) at an animal hospital, all the while telling myself that I was actually a professional writer simply awaiting my inevitable discovery."

Ron Moore was a rugby union and professional rugby league footballer of the 1930s playing club level rugby union (RU) for Bream RFC, and playing club level rugby league (RL) for Wakefield Trinity, and Bramley, as a centre, i.e. 3 or 4.

Ron Moore didn't play in Wakefield Trinity's 5-5 draw with Leeds in the 1934 Yorkshire Cup final during the 1934–35 season at Crown Flatt, Dewsbury on Saturday 27 October 1934, but played centre, i.e. number 3, in the 2-2 draw with Leeds in the 1934 Yorkshire Cup final replay during the 1934–35 season at Fartown Ground, Huddersfield on Wednesday 31 October 1934, and played Right-wing, i.e. number 2, in the 0-13 defeat by Leeds in the 1934 Yorkshire Cup final second replay during the 1934–35 season at Parkside, Hunslet on Wednesday 7 November 1934.

Ron Moore (boat builder)

Ron Moore is largely credited, along with George Olson and Bill Lee, to have given rise to the modern ULDB, or ultralight displacement boat. This yacht type revolutionized sailing as the modern world knows it, especially in downwind races as are common on California's West Coast.

The prototype for the Moore 24 Grendel was built by George Olson is his backyard in 1968. She measured 24' long and weighed just over 2000 lbs., less than half of what similar length sailboats in the marketplace displaced. The next development was Summertime which with various tweaks which became known as the Ultimate Wednesday Night Boat and proved itself repeatedly on the racecourse. The subsequent molds were taken from Summertime, and the production Moore 24 was born. Mr. Moore's famous boatyard was known as "the Reef" off of Soquel Ave. in Santa Cruz.

Through a long and storied career in boatbuilding, Ron and his wife Martha ran a boatyard that embodied the California Lifestyle, complete with barbecues and a hot tub. Sailing ULDBs required agile, athletic sailors that would shun creature comforts in favor of high performance surfing on big waves in windy conditions. Really outstanding Moore 24 sailors like Will Baylis, John Kostecki, Morgan Larson, and others have gone on to achieve the highest levels in world championship sailing and the America's Cup.
