Romance with a Double Bass

Romance with a Double Bass is a 1974 British short comedy film directed by Robert Young. It was adapted by Young and John Cleese from a screenplay by Bill Owen that was originally based on the short story of the same name by Anton Chekhov. It stars Cleese and his then wife Connie Booth. The cast included Andrew Sachs who would work with Cleese and Booth in Fawlty Towers the following year.

Plot

Smychkov (Cleese), a bassist, shows up too early for the ball of a beautiful princess, and decides to spend his extra time skinny dipping in the nearby lake. The princess (Booth), meanwhile, has gone fishing at the lake, and later decides to go skinny dipping as well. However, things change when a thief absconds with both Smychkov's and the Princess's clothes, and while the Princess is wandering around, she meets Smychkov. After their initially embarrassing encounter, he tries to help her return to the castle by hiding her in his bass case.

Novel with a Double Bass is a silent film short released in 1911. Directed by Kai Hanson, the film is based on a short story by Russian writer Anton Chekhov. The film was released seven years after his death, the time Chekhov thought people would stop reading his work. It is based on the story Roman s kontrabasom written in 1886.

The film is the first film adaptation of Chekhov's writing, and has been preserved.

Double Bass' is an album by bassists Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen and Sam Jones which was recorded in 1976 and released on the Danish SteepleChase label.

Reception

In his review for AllMusic, Ken Dryden said "Both bassists had played with the formidable pianist Oscar Peterson, so they not only knew something about playing rhythm but were very potent soloists to boot. Pedersen's singing tone contrasts with the darker sound of Jones, though the players nimbly shift roles throughout the sessions. ...This fun date was evidently the only time Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen and Sam Jones had the opportunity to work together, but they made the most of it".

The album's first single "Clint Eastwood", is named after the famous movie actor. The theme from The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly can be heard periodically throughout the song; this was one of several Sergio Leone-directed Italian westerns of the late 1960s in which Eastwood plays a character with no name. Eastwood also famously played Dirty Harry Callahan in a series of five films, and was the Mayor of Carmel, California in the 1980s. Eastwood is also a huge fan and supporter of jazz, and is an accomplished self-taught jazz pianist. Years after the release of this album, it was revealed that the track "Starshine" has an alternative version, which features Luton-based rap group Phi Life Cypher. This version is not available on any releases, but it is available on the Phi Life Cypher SoundCloud channel and also on the video-sharing website YouTube.
