Robert Whittaker

Robert Harding Whittaker (December 27, 1920 – October 20, 1980) was a distinguished American plant ecologist, active in the 1950s to the 1970s.

Born in Wichita, Kansas, he obtained a B.A. at Washburn Municipal College (now Washburn University) in Topeka, Kansas, and, following military service, his Ph.D. at the University of Illinois.

He held teaching and research positions at Washington State College in Hanford, Washington, the Hanford National Laboratories (where he pioneered use of radioactive tracers in ecosystem studies), Brooklyn College, University of California, Irvine, and, finally Cornell University.

Extremely productive, Whittaker was a leading proponent and developer of gradient analysis to address questions in plant community ecology. He provided strong empirical evidence against some ideas of vegetation development advocated by Frederic Clements. Whittaker was most active in the areas of plant community analysis, succession, and productivity. "During his lifetime Whittaker was a major innovator of methodologies of community analysis and a leader in marshaling field data to document patterns in the composition, productivity and diversity of land plant communities." Thus Whittaker was innovative in both empirical data sampling techniques as well as synthesizing more holistic theories.

Major-general Robert Frederick Edward Whittaker CB CBE TD (18 June 1894 – 17 February 1967) was a Territorial Major-general who served with the Anti-Aircraft Command.

He was educated at Ardingly College. He held the ranks of Colonel in 1938, Brigadier in 1939, and Major-general in 1945. He was made an OBE in 1938, CB in 1943, and CBE in 1945.

Robert Whittaker (fighter)

Robert John Whittaker (born 20 December 1990) is an Australian professional mixed martial artist of Māori descent currently competing in the Middleweight division of the Ultimate Fighting Championship. A professional MMA competitor since 2009, Whittaker was a contestant on the first installment of The Ultimate Fighter: The Smashes and won the Welterweight tournament. As of November 2015, he is #8 in the official UFC Middleweight rankings.

Background

Whittaker's father, Jack Whittaker, was a believer in the values of martial arts so he enrolled Robert in karate at an early age. After training in the discipline for a little over eight years, Robert switched to a Hapkido gym ran by Henry Perez. In 2003 Perez transformed his gym into a MMA gym. Having no other choice, Whittaker began training in MMA and was immediately hooked.

Early career

In 2009 Whittaker began competing in MMA as a professional. He signed with Australia's Xtreme Fighting Championships and made his debut 14 March 2009 against fellow pro debutee Chris Tallowin. Whittaker won the fight via TKO in the first round. Whittaker then started his career with Cage Fighting Championships, going 6-0 inside the promotion from 2009 to 2011, with a notable win over fellow TUF: Smashes castmate, Ben Alloway.

Robert H. "Bob" Whittaker (January 31, 1904 – June 5, 1990) was an American football player and coach of football and track. He served as the head football coach at Bowling Green State University from 1941 to 1954, compiling a record of 66–50–7.

Robert Christopher Cornwallis Whittaker (26 August 1908 – 11 February 1990) was an English cricketer active from 1927 to 1929 who played for Sussex. He was born in Melton, Suffolk and died in Fulham. He appeared in three first-class matches as a righthanded batsman who bowled left-arm orthodox spin. He scored 31 runs with a highest score of 31 and took six wickets with a best performance of five for 36.
