Robert Shaw (Royal Navy officer)

Captain Robert John Shaw MBE (10 February 1900 – 5 August 1995) was an English Royal Navy officer and cricketer. As a cricketer, he played as a right-handed batsman who fielded occasionally as a wicket-keeper. The son of Edward Domett Shaw, the first Bishop of Buckingham, and Agnes Shaw, he was born at High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire.

Naval career

Shaw entered the Royal Navy in 1913, where he was educated at Royal Naval College, Osborne and Royal Naval College, Dartmouth, where he studied until the end of 1915. Shaw served in the latter stages of World War I with the Royal Navy, entering as a Midshipman. Six months into his wartime service, he took part in the Battle of Jutland, second-in-command of a gun turret on the battleship HMS Hercules. He later gained the rank of Sub-Lieutenant following the war he was made an Officer of the Military Division of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire in 1919, for "valuable services in H.M.S. "Royal Sovereign," 1st Battle Squadron." From April to June 1920, Shaw studied at HMS Dryad in Portsmouth as part of his promotion to Lieutenant, which he obtained on 31 August 1920. The following year he served aboard the Royal yacht HMY Victoria and Albert III. He served aboard a number of ships throughout the mid-twenties, by 31 August 1928 he had risen to the rank of Lieutenant Commander.

Robert Shaw (footballer)

Robert Shaw (born 6 January 1955) is a former Australian rules footballer with the Essendon Football Club and coach in the VFL/AFL with the Fitzroy and Adelaide Football Clubs. Shaw was recruited from Sandy Bay Football Club in Tasmania.

Playing career

Recruited from Tasmanian club, Sandy Bay Shaw played 51 games between 1974 and 1981 for the Essendon Football Club and was noted as a talented defender who was struck down by injury throughout a promising career. Shaw underwent nine major operations finally retiring at the end of the 1982 season. Shaw was then appointed by Essendon coach, Kevin Sheedy as a specialist opposition analyst. In 1984 Shaw captain-coached Clarence Football Club in the Tasmanian Football League winning the premiership in 1984 and finishing runners-up in 1985. He retired at the end of the 1985 season before returning to Essendon as assistant coach in 1986. Shaw represented Tasmania in the 1979 and 1980 State of Origin carnivals and overall played six games for his state.

Robert Shaw (bishop)

Robert Shaw (died 1527) was a Scottish cluniac monk and prelate. A son of the Laird of Sauchie, he became a monk at Paisley Abbey. He was provided as Abbot of Paisley after the resignation of Abbot George Shaw on 20 July 1498. As abbot, he took an active if unimportant role in national affairs, appearing many times as a witness to royal charters. On 11 January 1525, he was given crown nomination to Pope Clement VII to succeed James Hepburn as Bishop of Moray. The nomination was agreeable with the papacy and on 17 May he was provided to the see. He held the diocese of Moray for only two years, serving once on a diplomatic mission to England. He died sometime before November 1527.
