Robert Ridgway

Robert Ridgway (July 2, 1850 – March 25, 1929) was an American ornithologist specializing in systematics. He was appointed in 1880 by Spencer Fullerton Baird, secretary of the Smithsonian Institution, to be the first full-time curator of birds at the United States National Museum, a title he held until his death. In 1883, he helped found the American Ornithologists' Union, where he served as officer and journal editor. Ridgway was an outstanding descriptive taxonomist, capping his life work with The Birds of North and Middle America (eight volumes, 1901–1919). In his lifetime, he was unmatched in the number of North American bird species that he described for science. As technical illustrator, Ridgway used his own paintings and outline drawings to complement his writing. He also published two books that systematized color names for describing birds, A Nomenclature of Colors for Naturalists (1886) and Color Standards and Color Nomenclature (1912). Ornithologists all over the world continue to cite Ridgway's color studies and books.

Robert Ridgway (congressman)

Robert Ridgway (April 21, 1823 – October 16, 1870) was a nineteenth-century congressman, lawyer and editor from Virginia.

Born in Lynchburg, Virginia, Ridgeway attended Emory and Henry College and graduated from the University of Virginia. He studied law and was admitted to the bar, commencing practice in Liberty, Virginia. He was editor of the Bedford Sentinel before he moved to Richmond, Virginia in 1853 and became the editor of the Richmond Whig. At the outbreak of the Civil War, Ridgeway retired to Amherst, Virginia. He was elected a Whig to the United States House of Representatives in 1866, but was not permitted to be seated due to incomplete reconstruction measures. He was later elected a Conservative to the House in 1869, serving from January 1870 until his death on October 16, 1870 in Amherst, Virginia. He was interred in the family cemetery in Amherst.

Robert Ridgway (engineer)

Robert Ridgway, sometimes spelt Robert Ridgeway, (born Oct. 19, 1862) was an American civil engineer. He did not study engineering at any school, but worked 49 years for New York City in the construction of major projects, and became Chief Engineer of the Transit Commission in 1921. He became president of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Metropolitan section. Further he became president of the national ASCE in 1925. The Ridgway Awards are an annual award of the ASCE Met section named for him.

Works

Major projects he worked on include the New Croton Aqueduct; the first NYC subway line; the first East River subway tunnel; the Catskill Aqueduct, the expansion of the IRT and BMT subways; and the construction of the IND subway.

In 1914, he was serving as Engineer of Subway Construction. A number of his works are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, with several listed in relation to one multiple property study, the "New York City Subway System MPS".
