Robert Maxwell

Ian Robert Maxwell, MC (born Ján Ludvík Hyman Binyamin Hoch; 10 June 1923 – 5 November 1991) was a Czechoslovakian-born British media proprietor and Member of Parliament (MP). He rose from poverty to build an extensive publishing empire. After Maxwell's death, huge discrepancies in his companies' finances were revealed, including his fraudulent misappropriation of the Mirror Group pension fund.

Early in his life, he escaped from Nazi occupation, joining the Czechoslovak Army in exile in the Second World War and was decorated after active service in the British Army. In subsequent years he worked in publishing, building up Pergamon Press to a major publishing house. After six years as an MP during the 1960s, he again put all his energy into business, successively buying the British Printing Corporation, Mirror Group Newspapers and Macmillan, Inc, among other publishing companies.

Maxwell had a flamboyant lifestyle, living in Headington Hill Hall in Oxford from which he often flew in his helicopter, and sailing in his luxury yacht, the Lady Ghislaine. He was notably litigious and often embroiled in controversy, including about his support for Israel at the time of its 1948 Palestine war. In 1989, he had to sell successful businesses, including Pergamon Press, to cover some of his debts. In 1991, his body was discovered floating in the Atlantic Ocean having fallen overboard from his yacht. He was buried in Jerusalem.

Robert Maxwell (producer)

Robert Maxwell Joffe (January 31, 1908 – February 3, 1971) was an American radio and television producer, screenwriter, and entertainment executive. He was one of the producers (and a writer and director) of The Adventures of Superman radio show and a producer of several TV series, including the early episodes of both Adventures of Superman (1951–1954) and Lassie (1954–1957; executive producer 1957-1958).

He also wrote episodes of the Superman radio and TV series as Richard Fielding (a pseudonym that he shared with fellow producers Whitney Ellsworth and Maxwell's then wife, Jessica Fielding Maxwell).

Robert Maxwell (golfer)

Robert Maxwell (12 May 1876 – 25 July 1949) was a Scottish amateur golfer who played during the late 19th century and early 20th century. Maxwell had four top-10 finishes in the The Open Championship. His best performance came in the 1902 Open Championship when he placed fourth. Maxwell won The Amateur Championship twice, in 1903 and 1909, both events having been played at Muirfield.

Early life

Maxwell was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, on 12 May 1876. He was the son of Francis Maxwell and Adelaide Maxwell (née Hay). At age four, he was living in North Berwick, Scotland with his parents, two brothers, and a sister. He received his education at Eton College and was an energetic boy. While at Eton, he acquired a "short and concise" manner of speaking.

As a youth, he was adroit at football and rowing. By age seven, Maxwell had already honed his golf game and, thanks to golf lessons he had received from Ben Sayers, the precocious young lad carded a 74 in two rounds on the Ladies' Course at North Berwick. As a young man, he had powerful arms and wrists, a quick swing, and was a long hitter of the golf ball.
