Robert Lewis (director)

Robert Lewis (March 16, 1909 – November 23, 1997) was an American actor, director, teacher, author and founder of the influential Actors Studio in New York in 1947.

In addition to his accomplishments on Broadway and in Hollywood, Lewis' greatest and longest lasting contribution to American theater may be the role he played as one of the foremost acting and directing teachers of his day. He was an early proponent of the Stanislavski System of acting technique and a founding member of New York's revolutionary Group Theatre in the 1930s. In the 1970s, he was the Head of the Yale School of Drama Acting and Directing Departments.

Early years

Robert (Bobby) Lewis was born in Brooklyn in 1909 to a middle class working family. Encouraged in the arts by his mother, a former contralto, Lewis acquired an early and lifelong interest in music, particularly opera. He studied cello and piano as a child but these eventually gave way to his love of acting. In 1929, he joined Eva Le Gallienne's Civic Repertory Theatre in New York City. His musical background proved invaluable later when he became a director of operas and filmed musicals in Hollywood.

Robert Lewis (rugby player)

Robert Lewis (born 20 November 1987) is a Welsh rugby union player.

A scrum-half, he has represented Wales at Under-18, Under-19 and at Under-20 level and was selected for the Wales Sevens squad in 2007. In which he competed in four tournaments, Adelaide Sevens, Wellington Sevens, Hong Kong Sevens and the San Diego Sevens. He was a key figure at Wales U19 age grade, helping them win the Under-19 Six Nations Championship Grand Slam and was Wales's top try scorer in the tournament. The same year he was selected for the Wales U19 World Cup squad traveling to Dubai.

After learning his trade with Ebbw Vale RFC whilst in the academy set-up. Robert made his professional senior debut for the Newport Gwent Dragons in 2007, coming off the bench away to Munster. He would go on to make a further 12 appearances for the Newport Gwent Dragons gaining Magners League, LV Cup and four Heineken Cup experiences. Scoring a try in the Christmas period derby win over the Ospreys.

In May 2009 Lewis joined London Welsh and made a total of 80 appearances in three seasons. In 2012 he played a major role in London Welsh winning the English Championship, beating Cornish Pirates in the final.

Lewis (lifting appliance)

A lewis (sometimes called a lewisson) is one of a category of lifting devices used by stonemasons to lift large stones into place with a crane, chain block, or winch. It is inserted into a specially prepared hole, or seating, in the top of a stone, directly above its centre of mass. It works by applying principles of the lever and utilises the weight of the stone to act on the long lever-arms which in turn results in a very high reaction force and friction where the short lever-arms make contact with the stone inside the hole and thereby prevents slipping.

Etymology

The name lewis may come from the Latin levo -avi, -atum meaning to levitate or lift, but the Oxford English Dictionary Online states, "the formation and the phonology are not easily explained on this hypothesis", preferring "origin obscure", and speculating that the term may derive from a personal name. The Romans used the lewis. The specially shaped hole that is shaped to fit the device is known as a lewis hole. Lewis holes in the uppermost masonry coursings are neatly repaired with matching indented plugs after the stone has been set in place.

Lewis (Middlesex cricketer)

Lewis (first name and dates unknown) was an English cricketer who was associated with Middlesex and made his first-class debut in 1830.

Lewis (crater)

Lewis is a crater on the far side of the Moon. It lies along the western edge of the Montes Cordillera mountains that surround the Mare Orientale impact basin. This crater has been heavily disrupted by the formation of the basin, and it is covered by ejecta from the impact leaving only an uneven depression in the surface. The outer rim is roughly circular, and the interior is uneven.
