Robert Garrett

Robert Garrett (May 24, 1875 – April 25, 1961) was an American athlete. He was the first modern Olympic champion in discus throw and shot put.

Biography

Born in Baltimore County, Maryland, (which surrounds its central independent city of Baltimore on its western, northern, and eastern sides). Garrett came from one of the most prominent and wealthiest families in Maryland, a railroad and financing family, grandson of famed John Work Garrett, (1820-1884), longtime American Civil War-era president of the "first in the nation" Baltimore and Ohio Railroad and the great-grandson of Robert Garrett, founder of the famous influential banking/finance/merchant/shipping firm founded 1819 in Baltimore and flourished in the 1830s and 40's. Younger Garrett studied at Princeton University. He excelled in track and field athletics as an undergraduate, and was captain of the Princeton track team in both his junior and senior years. Garrett was primarily a shot-putter, though he also competed in the jumping events. When he decided to compete in the first modern Olympic games being revived and held in Athens, Greece, in 1896, Professor William Milligan Sloane suggested he should also try the discus.

Lieutenant General Sir Robert Garrett KCB KH (1794 - 13 June 1869) was Commander of British Troops in China and Hong Kong.

Military career

Educated at Harrow School, Garrett was commissioned into the 2nd (The Queen's Royal) Regiment of Foot in 1811. He served in the Peninsular War and was present at the Battle of Fuentes de Onoro in 1811.

In 1846 he was appointed Commanding Officer of the 46th Regiment of Foot and in 1854 was despatched to the Crimean War where he commanded a Brigade of the 4th Division at the Siege of Sevastopol.

In 1858 he was appointed Commander of British Troops in China and Hong Kong before going on to India where he was General Officer Commanding a Division in Bengal and then in Madras. He returned to England in 1865 to take command of South East District.

In retirement he lived in Pall Mall in London.

He was also Colonel of the 43rd Regiment of Foot.

Family

In 1814 he married Charlotte Georgina Sophia Cavendish-Bentinck and in 1821 he married Louisa Davaynes with whom he had a son and a daughter.

Robert Garrett (basketball)

Robert Garrett (born 18 March 1977 in Ochsenfurt, Bavaria) is a German professional basketball shooting guard with the pro club the FC Bayern Munich (basketball) of the Basketball Bundesliga.From 1996 to 2002 Greene played with DJK Würzburg where he was a teammate of Dirk Nowitzki. Before transferring to Munich he played for the Brose Baskets of the 1st Division. He is 1.92 m (6 ft 3 ¾ in) in height and he weighs 98 kg (215 pounds). Garrett was also a member of the German national basketball team. He competed at the 2008 Olympic Games.

Robert Garrett (footballer)

Robert Garrett (born 5 May 1988) is a Northern Irish professional footballer who plays as a midfielder for Portadown. He has previously played for Stoke City, Wrexham and Linfield.

Club career

Garrett joined Stoke City in 2002 and played just twice for the club both coming as a substitute in games towards the end of the 2005–06 season. In the 2006–07 season, Garrett enjoyed a loan spell at Football League Two side Wrexham. He returned to Wrexham again on loan in the 2007–08 season. In the summer of 2007 Garrett returned to Belfast and joined Linfield and became one of their most important players. As Linfield added more quality to their midfield Robert's first team chances dried up, at which stage he had to consider his future.

On 16 April 2013 Garrett followed fellow Linfield men Daryl Fordyce & Albert Watson joining NASL club FC Edmonton on loan for their 2013 season.

On 2 May 2014, it was confirmed that Garrett had signed for Portadown FC.

International career

In May 2009, Garrett received his first call up to the Northern Ireland squad for a friendly with Italy in Pisa. He was one of five Irish League players called up, one of which was former Linfield team mate Alan Mannus.
