Robert Clarke

Robert Irby Clarke (June 1, 1920 – June 11, 2005) was an American actor best known for his cult classic science fiction films of the 1950s.

Early life

Clarke was born and raised in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. He decided at an early age that he wanted to be an actor, but nevertheless suffered from stage fright in his first school productions. He attended Kemper Military School and College, planning to make a career in the service, but dropped out after his asthma prevented his serving in World War II. He later attended the University of Oklahoma, where he acted in radio plays, and the University of Wisconsin–Madison, where he appeared on stage. He did not graduate, but hitched a ride to California to try to break into the motion picture business.

Career

After screen tests at 20th Century-Fox and Columbia Pictures, Clarke landed a berth as a contract player at RKO Radio Pictures. His first credited role was The Falcon in Hollywood (1944), then went on to play small roles in The Body Snatcher (1945), Bedlam (1946), and Dick Tracy Meets Gruesome (1947). When RKO dropped his option three years later, he began freelancing. In the 1950s, he appeared in many classic science fiction films, including The Man from Planet X (1951), Captain John Smith and Pocahontas (1953) as John Rolfe, The Incredible Petrified World (1957), The Astounding She-Monster (1957), and The Hideous Sun Demon (1959), which Clarke wrote, directed and produced.

Robert Clarke (cricketer)

Robert Wakefield Clarke was an English cricketer active from 1947 to 1957 who played for Northamptonshire. He appeared in 212 first-class matches as a left arm fast bowler who was a lefthanded batsman. Clarke was born in Finedon, Northamptonshire on 22 April 1924 and died in Sherborne, Dorset on 3 August 1981. He took 484 first-class wickets with a best performance of eight for 26 and he scored 2,745 runs with a highest score of 56, one of six half-centuries.

Robert G. "Rob" Clarke (born March 2, 1967) is a politician and career Royal Canadian Mounted Police officer. He was the Conservative Party of Canada's candidate in Desnethé—Missinippi—Churchill River for the March 17, 2008 federal by-election in which he defeated Liberal candidate Joan Beatty.

A member of the Muskeg Lake First Nation, he grew up in Quesnel, British Columbia. At the time of his election to the Canadian House of Commons he had been a member of the RCMP for 17 years, all of which have been spent in Saskatchewan, and has attained the rank of sergeant.

Clarke sponsored the Indian Act Amendment and Replacement Act as a private members bill. The bill became law in December 2014.

In the 2015 Canadian Election, Clarke was defeated by NDP candidate Georgina Jolibois by 1,190 votes.
