Riven

Riven is a puzzle adventure video game and the sequel to Myst. Developed by Cyan Worlds, it was initially published by Red Orb Entertainment, a division of Brøderbund. Riven was distributed on five compact discs and released on October 31, 1997, in North America; it was later released on a single DVD-ROM, with improved audio and a fourteen-minute "making-of" video. In addition to the PC versions, Riven has been ported to several other platforms, including the PlayStation, Sega Saturn, and most recently iOS-based devices.

The story of Riven is set immediately after the events of Myst. Having been rescued from the efforts of his sons, the main non-player protagonist Atrus enlists the help of the player character to free his wife from his power-hungry father, Gehn. Unlike Myst, which took place on several worlds known as Ages linked together by special books, Riven takes place almost entirely on the Age of Riven, a world slowly falling apart due to Gehn's destructive rule.

Development of Riven began soon after Myst became a success, and spanned more than three years. In an effort to create a visual style distinct from that of Myst, director Robyn Miller and his brother, producer Rand Miller recruited former Aladdin production designer Richard Vander Wende as a co-director. Brøderbund employed a US$10 million advertising campaign to publicize the game's release.

Riven (novel)

Riven is a Christian novel published through Tyndale House in 2008 written by Jerry Jenkins, detailing the deathbed-conversion of a career criminal, and the involvement in it of a largely unsuccessful pastor turned prison-chaplain.

Plot summary

Brady Darby's Story

Sixteen-year-old Brady Wayne Darby and his eight-year-old brother Peter live in Touhy Avenue Trailer-Park with their alcoholic chain-smoking mother Erlene; Erlene's husband had abandoned her shortly after Peter's birth.

Brady, who dreams of buying a car and fleeing the trailer-park, has obtained a part-time job sweeping up the local laundrette—from which he often takes a share of the coins in the machines' boxes to supplement his wages. At school, he is on the Football Team; however, he generally does not perform well academically, which causes him to be cut from the athletic squad—with a suggestion from the coach to try the Drama Club.

Thomas Carey's Story

Fortysix-year-old Thomas Carey, a pastor who has never been long at one church, finds a posting in Georgia. While going there, he and his wife Grace visit their twentyfour-year-old daughter Ravinia, a law student at Emory University of whose spiritual position they have great concern.

Riven is an American heavy metal band formed in Sacramento, California in 2012. The line up consists of 4 of the 7 members from the 2008-2011 line up of Motograter, including Michael "Angel" Woodruff, Mark Nosler, Tyler Hole, and Jeremy "Twitch" Scheller.

History

Motograter (2008-2011)

In 2009, before Riven was formed, Motogater guitarist, Matt "Nuke" Nunes introduced a "New Breed" line-up of Motograter 3 years after the previous line-up, which included current Five Finger Death Punch vocalist Ivan L. Moody. The "New Breed" consisted of Michael "Angel" Woodruff on vocals, Matthew "Nuke" Nunes on lead guitar, Tyler Hole on rhythm guitar, Mylon Guy on bass, Jeremy "Twitch" Scheller on drums, and Mark Nosler on the motograter. They toured for almost 3 years after releasing an EP, Pre-Release in 2009. The line-up eventually broke up in September 2011, with lifestyle differences being to blame.

Riven (2011-present)

On Tuesday, October 11, Angel posted a link on his personal Facebook page to a Kickstarter page that is funding a new project, involving members who left Motograter. The link quickly spread, with the first day raising more than $750, but funding stalled at just over $3000, with the page taken down a month later. Angel has since shared the address to his PayPal account so that people could donate without time constraints.
