Rick Moranis

Frederick Allan "Rick" Moranis (born April 18, 1953) is a Canadian actor, screenwriter and songwriter. He came to prominence in the sketch comedy series Second City Television (SCTV) in the 1980s and later appeared in several Hollywood films, including Strange Brew (1983), Ghostbusters (1984), Spaceballs (1987), Little Shop of Horrors (1986), Honey, I Shrunk the Kids (and its sequels), Parenthood (1989), My Blue Heaven (1990), and The Flintstones (1994).

In 1997, Moranis began an 18-year-long hiatus from acting to raise his children as a widowed father. He has not appeared in a live-action film since, although he has provided voice-over work for a few animated films, released comedy albums and made appearances at fan conventions.

Early life

Moranis was born in Toronto, Ontario, to a Jewish family. He went to elementary school with Geddy Lee, frontman of the rock band Rush.

Career

His career as an entertainer began as a radio disc jockey in the mid-1970s, using the on-air name "Rick Allan" at three Toronto radio stations.

Famous quotes by Rick Moranis:

"For some reason I just started writing these songs. And I was singing them to a couple of friends on the phone. After I had three or four, they started saying to me that I should do something with them."
"The music is pretty simple: It's, you know, it's country music. There's a couple of melodies that are okay, I guess."
"And I discovered after a couple years that I really didn't miss making movies."
"And we had the perhaps unfair advantage of not having to worry about what an audience was gonna think. We were in a vacuum. We were making little short films, really."
"I pulled out of making movies in about '96 or '97."
"There will always be another group of kids going to college, drinking beer, and discovering that movie. Many of them have never even heard of SCTV."
"I think that I recall the nostalgic '50s: the start of early television and rock-and-roll, and I think everything seemed to get very generic. Not much has changed."
"I always find it flattering when somebody recognizes me."
"About a year ago, out of the blue, I just wrote a bunch of songs."
"I think Alison Krauss and her band are the best today. The same goes for Rick Skaggs and his band."
"Well, I took a sabbatical. I walked away from shooting movies because I couldn't handle the travel. I'm a single parent. I had young kids, and I found that keeping in touch with them from hotel rooms and airports wasn't working for me. So I stopped."
"What we see is what they're trying to sell us. It's not true nostalgic as much as it is repeating old material because it's less expensive than new material."
"On the last couple of movies I made - big-budget Hollywood movies - I really missed being able to create my own material."
"The actual process of filmmaking, the many hours out of your life- it is very slow and boring. I'm not interested in that now unless an opportunity was provided for me."
"When I got to filmmaking, the most democratic of environments where anybody could say anything, those were the best environments, but what you don't want to assume is that you know what the audience is thinking."
"My own personal taste in films as a member of the audience was not completely in line with films I was doing."
"I don't limit my taste. There's some jazz that I like and there's some opera. I've been listening to what was essentially country music, but it crossed over to rock."
"Well, whether it's on film or on TV, you don't want to throw too many curves at your audio and video guys."

Three Days Rest

by: Rick Moranis

You are some kind of lady
With a Mensa mind and curves to kill
I love all the work you’ve had done on you
Keep on sending me those bills.
I am glad your serve’s improving
Love the fabric in the den
The Pinot Noir you bought in Napa
Was sublime with your Cornish hen.
But I can’t give you what you need tonight.
Just feel the need to confess
It may be hard for me to make love to you just right.
Cause I’m on three days rest.
Maybe I’ll test-drive a Vespa
Forget to shave, collect some Art.
Reinstate myself at Jack La Laine
Walk the course and lose the cart.
I don’t know if I can be your man tonight.
I don’t mean to obsess.
I just don’t want to be anything but right,
And I’m on three days rest.
Boys all want me to go rafting.
So far no one’s taking their phone.
Got the whole Lou Rawls collection
To keep you company while you’re alone.
And when I get back here tomorrow.
I’ll be besting my own best.
I’ll be something that you’ve never seen before.
I’ll be on four days rest.
Was a time my eye would wander,
But my heart was always still
I chose this life, I will not squander
What I can save with just a pill.
So I surfed around and I found the site
Just arrived UPS.
I’m gonna be able to make love to you tonight.
Right here in our love nest…
Even on three days rest.
