Richmond Hill, Ontario

Richmond Hill (2011 population 185,541) is a town located in the southern portion of York Region, Ontario, Canada. It is part of the Greater Toronto Area and is bounded by Bloomington Rd. (Aurora town limit) to the north, York Regional Road 7 (Vaughan city limit west of Yonge St., Markham city limit east of Yonge St.) to the south, Bathurst St. (Vaughan city limit) to the west, and Ontario Highway 404 (Markham city limit) to the east. Its southern limit is about 4 kilometres (3 miles) north of the Toronto city limit, Steeles Avenue, and approximately 20 kilometres (12 miles) north of the downtown core of Toronto. The town extends 14 kilometres (9 miles) north-south and 7 kilometres (3.5 miles) east-west. It is the third most populous municipality in York Region and the 28th most populous municipality in Canada.

Richmond Hill has in recent years seen a huge population upsurge, being Canada's fastest-growing community in the 1990s. It is an affluent town with a large number of people employed in areas of business, finance, industry and healthcare. The town is home to the world-renowned David Dunlap Observatory telescope, at one time the second largest telescope in the world, and still the largest in Canada. Richmond Hill is twinned with Lakeland, Florida.

Richmond Hill (Manhattan)

Richmond Hill was a colonial estate in Manhattan, New York City, that was built on a 26-acre (110,000 m²) parcel of the "King's Farm" obtained on a 99-year lease in 1767 from Trinity Church by Major Abraham Mortier, paymaster of the British army in the colony. Part of the site is now the Charlton-King-Vandam Historic District of Manhattan.

History

The house stood southeast of the modern intersection of Varick and Charlton Streets and some 100 to 150 yards west of the informal footpath that crossed the ditch in Lispenard's Meadows with a plank, and connected the city with Greenwich Village, which lay north and east of Richmond Hill. The house, as it appears in a 19th-century woodblock in the Museum of the City of New York, was five bays wide, with a tetrastyle Ionic portico, and three bays deep, where there were paired dormers in the attic. It was a frame structure, with carpentered imitation quoins at the corners, raised on a high basement and approached by a flight of steps.

Richmond Hill (LIRR station)

Richmond Hill Station was a station on the Montauk Branch of the Long Island Rail Road in the Richmond Hill section of the borough of Queens, in New York City. The station was located at Myrtle Avenue and spanned from the intersection of Jamaica Avenue and Lefferts Boulevard through an unnumbered section of Hillside Avenue.

History

Richmond Hill Station was originally built by the South Side Railroad of Long Island in 1868 as Clarenceville Station, which is not to be confused with the LIRR Clarenceville Station on the Atlantic Branch. The name was changed to Richmond Hill in November 1871. It had two tracks with a station house on one side and an enclosed wooden shelter on the other. The original building survived until a grade crossing elimination project replaced it with an elevated structure in 1923.

The station was closed on March 16, 1998, along with nine others (including the other four on the Lower Montauk branch) due to low ridership (this station and Penny Bridge, also on the Lower Montauk, had just one daily rider each at the time of their closure). The station and platform remain, though access via the staircase is gated off.

Richmond Hill line

Richmond Hill is one of the seven train lines of the GO Transit system in the Greater Toronto Area, Ontario, Canada. It extends from Union Station in Toronto to Richmond Hill, running along the Canadian Northern Ontario Railway lines owned by CN.

A Richmond Hill commuter train service had been announced in 1969 by the provincial government, but its implementation was cancelled in 1970 in favour of bus commuter service.

After the Lakeshore East, Lakeshore West, and Georgetown lines, the Richmond Hill line was the fourth in the GO network to open. Following a promotional opening on Saturday April 29, 1978, regular service began on Monday May 1. Unique amongst GO rail corridors, the initial lineup of four stations has not changed since opening day.

As part of the GO 2020 strategy, the corridor will be upgraded and extended to Aurora Road in Stouffville. Phase I of the project, for which construction will begin in the fall of 2011 and be completed in the fall of 2013, will establish the Gormley GO Station where the line intersects Stouffville Road, create a train layover facility at Bethesda Road, and grade the corridor for the extension. Phase II, which will begin after completion of Phase I, will consist of the construction of Bloomington GO Station and grading of the route.

Ontario

Ontario (ⁱ/ɒnˈtɛərioʊ/) is one of the ten provinces of Canada, located in east-central Canada. It is Canada's most populous province by a large margin, accounting for nearly 40 percent of all Canadians, and is the second largest province in total area. Ontario is fourth largest in total area when the territories of the Northwest Territories and Nunavut are included. It is home to the nation's capital city, Ottawa, and the nation's most populous city, Toronto.

All of Ontario's 2,700 km (1,678 mi) border with the United States follows inland waterways: from the west at Lake of the Woods, eastward along the major rivers and lakes of the Great Lakes/Saint Lawrence River drainage system. These are the Rainy River, the Pigeon River, Lake Superior, the St. Marys River, Lake Huron, the St. Clair River, Lake St. Clair, the Detroit River, Lake Erie, the Niagara River, Lake Ontario and along the St. Lawrence River from Kingston, Ontario, to the Quebec boundary just east of Cornwall, Ontario.

Ontario silver mine

The Ontario silver mine is a mine near Park City, Utah. It was purchased by George Hearst through R C Chambers from prospectors for $27,000 in 1872.

Hearst and his business partners James Ben Ali Haggin and Lloyd Tevis owned this mine and constructed the necessary infrastructure to make it productive, including hoists and stamp mill. The mine was not profitable for its first three years. According to legend, expenses of development substantially drained Hearst's financial resources. As a result of his straitened circumstances, Hearst sold his home and horses, and even dismissed his servants and enrolled his son William Randolph Hearst in public school. Chambers, who had been retained as manager, brought the bonanza ore body into production by the late 1870s. It eventually produced fifty million dollars worth of silver and lead.

By the time of Hearst's death in 1891, the Ontario mine had paid him more than $12 million in dividends. This was only one of the four big mines he had brought in in the West, including the Ophir on the Comstock Lode, the Homestake Mine (Nevada), and the Anaconda Copper Mine (Montana). The mine also made manager Chambers one of Utah's Bonanza Kings.
